All the petty headaches that come with managing people. I had no idea how whiny people could be. Also, the meetings. So.Many.Meetings.
This is so true.
You don’t get the benefit of the doubt - people make up weird stuff about your plans and motives.
Other people are not like you. At all. They see the world totally differently and are worried about stuff you have no idea about.
I would add to this that explaining the "why" behind decisions is absolutely critical as well. No matter what decision you make, individuals will develop their own narrative for why the decision was made (usually they'll assume the worst intent). The only way to combat it is to explain the why of the decision, and listen intently (as PD1 mentioned) and then continue to assess/evaluate/refine the decision based upon the input. It takes a lot of time, but it beats putting processes or policies in place that everyone rebels against.
The biggest time-consuming issues will be personnel matters. Addressing absences, sick time etc. In team fighting and lazy employees.
People management involves the (new) leader answering the question Why Should I Be Led By You. This is a question in the minds of the direct reports..
I think there is a book on this that I’ve not read. I try to answer this through my words and deeds on a daily basis.
I know what book you are talking about, it says when going in to a new management position not to imply any changes for the first few weeks. You have to observe how things are being done currently, ask questions, and seek to fully understand the ropes before making decisions that go against current operations.
I concur with SM1, you're basically going to find that with the leadership role you now play a part in strategic big picture stuff but also have to address things that come up with subordinates that might seem silly or minor but you're the only one with the authority to actually enact a final decision.
