What makes a good corp dev team vs others? Sector? Teams background? Acquisitive?

It depends what you mean by good. I would say there are many factors that go into an assessment of a corporate development team.

if they claim to be acquisitive - how many deals do they evaluate and close each year? what is their deal process like? is it streamlined? ask questions about this and see if you can identify any holes.

The backgrounds of the members of the team can typically give you some color of how the group structured - if it’s mostly ex bankers they probably like to focus a lot on deals etc.

The sector can also provide some context on what you can expect as some types of sectors are just generally more acquisitive than others.

The best way though to evaluate a CD team is to speak with them. Whether that is through a formal interview process or connecting with an old employee. I’d first suggest figuring out if you want to join an acquisition heavy group or a group that is more focused on strategic projects.
