Mine is usually around $3,500. They give us gift cards so it’s not taxed. It goes up the longer you’re with the firm.
we get the equivalent to one paycheck as our Christmas bonus
That is nice! Xmas bonus here has been more like $200. I believe all paralegals in the group received the same and it must have come from a pool the attorneys in the group contributed to. Then a few attorneys give certain paralegals small gifts like chocolates etc.
Nice. We don’t get holiday bonuses and it blows. Like attorneys, we have to meet a set amount of hours before we are considered for an annual bonus but only if we are $xx profitable - which seems to be an arbitrary number. So if we work on a lot of pro bono or firm matters or get our usual rate cut significantly by an attorney one doesn’t usually work for, the arbitrary $xx is not met.
Bonuses are great, but unfortunately not guaranteed. It also varies from small to large firms. Some small firms pay awesome bonuses. In my experience, it’s better to focus on the salary, not the bonus. Attorneys who do well with the help of a great paralegal should always be willing to give something substantial...period! Also, contingency vs billable can affect bonus structure. My insurance defense side friends make great salaries, and some make great bonus, but most, if not all, absolutely hate the billable tracking aspect of the job.
