What’s the average utilization of a senior associate in M&A tax at a Big 4?

Can anyone comment on Houlihan AFR (Accounting and Financial Reporting) vs the Big 4 practices? Have an upcoming phone interview but not sure if it’s an opportunity I would really take.

PPMDs that have switched firms, either with the Big 4 or exiting to a smaller firm — what are the pros and cons? Any unanticipated learnings? TIA

Why do people at big 4 work so much if they have offshore teams to help? I'm at a MM firm and we get crappy data all day plus we're building everything out ourselves but even then I'm still able to keep it under 50 hours most weeks.

Questions to ask during phone interviewer

I think the quality of tax returns being filed has gone down significantly. One of the reasons is that the “old school” mentality of if you are assigned a tax return you work as many extra hours to complete the return, however people cap their hours and those returns either don’t get done or they are done poorly and it’s better to get filed then to get it late. Leaders in PA need to factor in that the newer generation will not just “get it done” regardless if the amount of extra hours.

Just asked a client if they had any virtual currency activity in 2019. Their response, "I don't know what virtual currency is." Guess that's a nope.

I left public accounting for industry about 1.5 years ago. I was a senior in a PCS group. I'll be looking to get back into PA in a PCS group once I get licensed. Does being out of PA for 2 years mean I should look for an experienced staff role, or could I get a senior position? My industry role isn't tax related, so I would have to get back up to speed on all the tax changes in the past couple of years.

We are still waiting for our refund for 1040 efiled in March (still pending per where's my refund) but now realized we're not going to get the monthly child tax credit payments because "Your eligibility is pending." We qualify using 2019 or 2020 amounts (stay at home spouse).

We don't need it early, but have to imagine that countless others are in our situation but don't have the luxury of waiting. I've called IRS at least a dozen times since but never get through to an actual person.
