for me (and in consulting) is after a while you can see the matrix. You figure out who is in consulting for the long run and who is not, what clients are really after, etc.
At this point in my career I just don't give a crap about internal politics because I don't have to. I know the market, what I'm worth and confident enough to understand the value that I bring. Im not afraid to being let go, cause I might do better on my own, but just don't have the appetite for the risk as my employers have come to recognize the value I bring to them. Yeah, I likely will never be a partner, or VP but i think Ive structured my career in a way that Im very happy with it.
Love dealing with difficult clients and challenging relationships, but I just dont have the appetite for the same with internal politics.
So I don't take crap if I don't feel like it.
Im my own master.
When you get to this point it is so emowering.

Realizing what’s important and what’s not
In the past couple years, I’ve really stopped caring about what people thing, or playing internal politics. I just really want to sell and deliver work and mostly be left alone.
Yes. All of this. Completely agree with everything shared.

As you said, not caring about what others think about you. Being more empathetic and much more patient with others and best of all for me no more monthly visitor.
The joy of spending my hard earned money on people I care about, family, community, events, hobbies. I was dirt poor for a decade out of school, so every day feels like the lottery to me.
Spending less money, time and energy on occasional meetings with females, and spending more time on creative work
The wisdom of knowing when to keep my mouth shut and simply observe. The realization that life is finite and that you don't reach happiness in the way of a constant blissed-out state but rather in small moments. That whatever is terrible and seems devastating, really isn't - you will undoubtedly get through it some how, some way. Also that life is (mostly) beautiful!
I completely agree. I just had a sleeve tattooed on my arm, full of rich color, and my partner asked “do you think anyone at the office will find it unprofessional?” My response “of someone in the office has a concern about ink on my arm related to my ability to deliver work, that’s a them problem”
Finally having kids and seeing your kids get older. Then realizing you don't give two hoots about work. It's just a "good" way to pay the bills
