Politics is key. What’s your business case? Lay out a plan to early promo with leadership. Essentially, if I do these 5 things, you will give me the promotion. Off the engagement items will certainly set you apart (networking, recruitment, some sort of involvement in growth)
Make sure your other jobs feel the same. You don’t have to be acting manager there too, but demonstrate the skills to be a manager (can work with partners, project manage, research, budget, get more junior members to do their work on time and at highest quality, etc). Business case doesn’t mean just one client, but your book of business, what the office and area needs are, etc. good advice above on getting involved in non-client work (recruiting, networking, community service, etc) You will also need support not only from this partner you mention but the partner on your other clients as well. Have that conversation upfront now and discuss with them what other goals they might have for you to get to that level. Best of luck, certainly sounds like you are on the right track
This is a mid size job

Assurance
We have been without a senior manager since early March 2018 and I finished the audit with the partner. I’ve been doing all the manager work since then and we still have not found a senior manager or a manager. I would say the partner steps down 35% and I step up 65%
I’m on a big job and am the lead senior and have great reviews (between almost always and gold standard on this job) and 5/6 gold standards on the mid size job. I’ve had a slightly above almost always performance since lead was rolled out and am performing above my peer average in every category. I have the same partner on both jobs. I am also in pursuit of some badges, attend networking events, have been to my college to recruit, and participate on an EY sports team against other companies. Also have recently applied to a rotation in another department. Anything else I should be considering?
It is one of the toughest things for management because your peers might be upset and end up leaving. However, If a lot of people in your group have gotten early promotion then you have a shot.
Good luck
I just went through this during the last promotion cycle. People are right - politics is key. Make sure that if this partner is well respected in the PPED group that they specifically mention you should be promoted to manager if they fee that way. Also make sure that you have other people to back that up. Also talk to your counselor about it and make sure they are going to set up and support this. Good luck!
