What’s the proper way (or an acceptable, non-desperate way) to respond to an attorney trying to refer a case out?

A benefit of my state bar association is online forums. And often, other attorneys post, seeking to refer their client to counsel competent in a practice area they don’t handle. When it falls in my practice area, I’m happy to take the business. Options are: (1) reply to whole forum or (2) reply to sender. Which is better? And what to say?

I generally reply to the sender via email (there’s an option to do it via the forum platform) and say: my firm would love the referral.

Have the potential client mention they’re a referral (we waive the consultation fee for word of mouth referrals)

Never hurts to mix in the two, especially if it really is your practice area. Try to make it so you’re “the guy” for the practice area in question, especially so that other attorneys will immediately refer you out to PCs.

I save referral names in a special folder in my email inbox in case I ever need, and I have a few other attorneys I almost automatically refer smaller cases that I don’t want/may have conflicts on.

My boss in my creative agency threatened to fire me because I, a male, came into work with my nails painted. HR is having a very complicated day today as I found out I could take legal action if he does fire me since we don't have an established dress code that has any guidelines against male nail polish wearing.

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I started working for a new law firm, much larger than the firm I was working for previously. The main attorney that I work under had noticed some mistakes I was making (I am a NY paralegal who took this position with the understanding that they’d be teaching me NJ and NYC real estate). Anyways, the attorney decided to tell the HR manager about the mistakes I had been making. Rather than HR discussing with me, the manager told my dramatic coworker to tell me..how should I handle this? Very hurt!

Any insight on negotiating Westlaw or transitioning to lexis?

We are a firm of 5 transactional attorneys and the bonus structure is very unclear. The usual “based on personal performance and firm profitability” language. I wonder how this is calculated in general. What is the percentage bracket of the bonus? Assume it is a high performance 9+ year attorney and the firm is profitable (even with COVID). The based salary is low $120k. Firm is in Tx. I’d love to hear your comments.
