What’s your take on remote vs in-office finance roles? I’ve seen early-career folks struggle more remotely, even though flexibility is great.

Same. As much as I love remote work, if I was just starting out, I'd tell myself to take an in-office role. The face time really does make a difference.

like

In office is great if your actual core team are all physically there and not just you sitting in the office while everyone else is remote.

Started off in office and now I’m remote. I wouldn’t do it any other way.

I feel like I learned a huge amount from working around people when I was starting out. Had I been working remotely I can't imagine that could have been replicated. There really is a learning through osmosis factor that shouldn't be ignored. After a few years it may not matter if one is mostly remote or not, but in the early years of one's career working remotely would seem terribly isolating.

like

Also depends if you have family/ kids. Starting out def in person..

I think it depends on how many other people are remote workers and mtg frequency. I was hybrid for the first 2 years of my career, and I constantly felt like I was missing on growth opportunities because nobody’s hybrid schedules lined up and meetings weren’t a big thing=no face-time with important people. Been in my current role for 2.5yrs now and, it’s more likely for someone in the department to be remote than not and the day to day is very meeting heavy= my manger’s manager’s manager knows me by name and what I do. I definitely feel I have much more growth opportunity in this position.

I would rather work from home due to being visually impaired. It’s much less stressful for me, and I don’t have to worry about being in the street. There’s nothing more tiring than a 2-3 hour commute on public transportation every day, to and from work. 4-6 hours a day plus a full work day is too much after 15 years. I asked my current employer to work remote (others in our department do) and was told it’s “unfair” to others that I would get to work remote. What kind of response is that? Being blind in one eye and losing vision in the other isn’t fair either.

like

I think there’s a lot of value in starting your career in-person, building experience and learning the ropes as well as building a network - maybe 4 days a week in office to give a little bit of flexibility. I think that the flexibility of remote and hybrid work is excellent for more mid-level and experienced professionals.

I agree with that. The flexibility is great, but early on it’s so much harder to learn by osmosis and build relationships when you’re fully remote.

I did 2 years in person and am now remote. I’m grateful I was in person at first, and even more grateful I’m remote now 😀

I’m struggling at the moment to gauge how much I should be getting paid in my position as i feel I’m heavily underpaid for the work I do, which includes managing digital marketing operations across 12+ countries, manage the studio/creatives plus lead on any campaigns and strategies, etc. I’m also remote UK-based although my company is international. So what do you feel a fair UK wage would be for the role? I love my job/team but the stress isn’t worth it for me atm. Thanks in advance!

Hello! I’m from South Carolina and I was wondering if there was any media companies/ productions that are currently hiring PA’s or entry level workers fully remote? I would love to work in LA more than anything, but I can’t afford to move there which means I’ll just have to stick it out in South Carolina for some time. But unfortunately, South Carolina doesn’t have many opportunities in the media/entertainment industry. Any leads, tips, or advice is much appreciated. Thank you!

Played hooky for 4 days (caregiving), came back today and haven't done anything other than listening in 3 meetings, but still getting paid for all 40hrs this week 🙏🙏

It’s interesting to see several articles and surveys emerging saying the initial bump in productivity from mass remote working has started to come down or even go negative as the novelty wears off and people start to get worn down from longer hours, the stresses of having kids at home full time, burn out from increased workloads, stress from the pandemic, etc. Curious to here people’s thoughts, do you think you’re less productive now than back around the April timeframe?
