When I was younger I thought that if I worked harder and stayed later, things would improve and I would feel excited about my job. Annoyingly for me it didn’t change anything apart from lowering my energy and raising expectations. For me it was a hard lesson in the difference between effort and self-protection- did anyone else have this moment of realisation?

I can totally relate to that. I went through a period where I was happy to overextend myself, assuming that it would help me in the job. All it really did was make it so I was taken for granted. If you're too accommodating people just take advantage of it, and in the end it's discouraging.

I was raised by parents who had the old school mindset that hard work and loyalty was all you needed to get ahead in life. Of course, they were boomers and loyalty and hard work did pay off for them. I started out that way too and realized very quickly that I did not, and was never going to have the same opportunities they did no matter how much of myself I put into my work.

Hi! Can someone recommend a source for learning how do simple, fun music lessons on Zoom? I teach first grade and use music for my transitions. I would also like to play songs for them with my guitar, but am concerned it won’t sound good on zoom (the guitar, not my voice, which is bad, we established that long ago)

At my uncles wedding in Madrid I remember lying down on the grass in the courtyard after their first dance and crying, my Dad came and saw me, laid down in his suit beside me and asked what was wrong.

“I know my boyfriend wouldn’t dance with me like that at our wedding”

And we just lay there as I cried, and then got up. Had a drink.

Said boyfriend left years ago, and now I have a wonderful man who just asked me what type of dance lessons I want for our wedding next year.

Don’t give up.

What’s your most memorable science lesson (as a teacher or student)?

High school special class (self-contained) teachers: What do you use for planning? I’ve always been an inclusive teacher, so I followed the plan book of my co-teacher. I can’t even decide if I should go digital or paper-based let alone make a final decision! I’ll be teaching 9-11th grade math and 11th grade science. The 11th grade classes I can very much do whatever I (or the student) want/need…there isn’t a set curriculum

To all the post-9/11 veterans, it’s a somber day that unites us all in the reason we fought. It’s easy to forget - especially with the younger generation having 9/11 be a history lesson rather than something they lived through. The waters became muddy with two wars and politicians, but you all stepped up and did your duty. Thank you all for your service, it’s an honor whether we crossed paths or not.

My husband is looking to make a move from journalism (writing about sports and pop culture) to brand strategy. Does anyone know of any junior brand strategy openings in San Francisco?

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.
