Which would you take:

- stay at current industry FS F100 firm. Incredible support from leadership, super great WLB (30 hrs a week), potential promo
TC: $115k

- offer from top industry Tech firm (think Microsoft/Salesforce/FAANG). Doing the same work, but likely more hours, and unknown leadership support.
TC: $180k

Obviously the jump in TC is huge, but I really value WLB.

Any insight would be super helpful!

I'd take the money. 🤷🏽. That's a significant amount .

like

2nd the counter.

A transparent conversation: I love it here, but the TC gap is too big to ignore. I really see myself continuing to grow with this company and appreciate the support and mentorship you've provided over the last years. What can we do to close this gap, so I can stay?

(expect them to meet in the middle, and then don't expect to be able to ask for another counter for 3-4 years)

like

You’d be surprised at getting counters. I thought I wouldn’t get one (2 YOE, not an SME) but was offered a 20% increase to stay (almost FAANG offer)

I ultimately left for the FAANG because of long term opportunities. FS didn’t feel like a growing org, and upward trajectory and TC would be slow.

like

Move? You can always come back to FS

like

This is correct.

Stay, no question

like

No it's worth the jump, but you said you really value WLB

Try to get a counter from current firm!

Thansk, this was my idea as well. unfortunately, confirmed current firm won't match haha

Id only feel comfortable staying at the F100 if I saw a clear, realistic path to a drastic increase in comp. A role in a top tech firm is going to open up a lot of doors. The variable here is that it’s hard to say how many of those doors are already open to you with that F100 roll.

like

Do you have a wife, kids, hobbies, or other things that the extra time could be allocated to that will bring you happiness and balance?

If not then take the TC and stronger career path in tech. It might be a wash in terms of pay per hour, but if the free time isn't bringing you any value then you might as well monetize it and work more.

like

Thanks! The offer is actually on the Microsoft Azure and AI team. I know you're in a different part of the org, but would you have any insight on their WLB?

I think anything consistently over 50 is too much for me.

like

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Most jobs increase in responsibility and hours as you progress, even in industry.

Coasting to VP level on 30 hours a week is not realistic

Thoughts on this offer? $145K base + 10% bonus + $5K signing (TC year 1: $165K). No stock. No RRSP matching. Role is BizOps Senior Manager (IC). Industry is Insurance. Is it too low? Thanks.

This may be an unpopular opinion.

But I think it's kinda shitty that when FAANG people get laid off, everyone feels bad for them and they get so many resources to get rehired, but the same is not true for people that get laid off at smaller lesser known organizations.

Like those FAANG people will be fine, they got generous severance packages. The people who actually need help often get overlooked or are forgotten.

Hey I’m currently at an Fortune 500 IT company as a consultant working functionally. I’m not a developer and not a data scientist. I’m looking to move towards solutions architect roles, is AWS or Azure certifications gonna hold much weight if my experience isn’t really super technical only have 2 years out of undergrad where I got a degree in civil engineering. Also looking to speak to any AWS Or Azure solution architects that can chat through what the role looks like thanks!

Thoughts on the below role?

Got messaged about an analyst job doing the preliminary discovery stuff including dashboards. But not for the business, but to give recommendations to data scientists about where to focus. Having been a modeling DS, I can't imagine why I'd outsource exploratory analysis. Anyone seen a team like this before?

Also worried about career prospects. I've been wanting to turn business facing, but becoming the only DA on a DS team seems like it'd be a dead end with promos?

My company was just acquired by a private equity firm. We’ve been around for 25+ years and have been a public company. Junior Dev presents an issue they’re having. I hint to the fact that it may be framework related (this is a very simple fix). The questions they are asking seem out of context, so I ask if they have done any framework related research generally, as our entire application is built on top of this. They answered no, they have been here for months, and it’s not like this wasn’t in the job description. Am I missing something here? Trying to be helpful but stuff like this is frustrating.
