I asked for 3 months, because I quit a good job to take the new one. When they laid me off in 2020 they tried giving me 2 months. But I had the agreement.
I did once. There’s usually a clause that says you owe them a certain amount of notice - just tell them you also want a certain amount of notice or pay in lieu of. If they recruited you especially you can ask for severance equivalent to the years of experience at your previous agency to be recognized
Great suggestion.
I negotiated for 4 weeks pay if there were layoffs and got it at Publicis. Normally you get that only after a few years but I’ve been burned before coming into an agency and getting laid off 6 months later because of unexpected client loss.

I just tried. Was told even most of the c-suite didn’t have it. I said well, that’s on them. Still didn’t get it.

I was fairly in demand, but went to a “hot” shop. If they’re desperate for you, I think you can push for it.
I have successfully negotiated severance at the time of hire because let’s be honest our industry sucks when it comes to volatility, mercurial management and capricious clients, all of which are beyond the control of you and the hiring manager. Several things come into play. Are you relocating? Is the location a good advertising job market or is the agency the only real game in town? Are you leaving a good gig? If you have a significant other are they leaving a gig... all of these should factor into your decision to accept the position in the first place, but also justify your desire for a reasonable safety-net.
I had four months brand side, negotiated one more for each year of service when laid off. Plus half bonus, even though I performed over 90% of the work. Plus six months cobra. One month per year of service is a good benchmark.
One month per year of of service is absolutely not a good bench in the agency world. A week per of service is what they would prefer, which is simply not fair to employees.
Got 4 weeks negotiated if not otherwise due to performance through end of '21.
I got 4 weeks pay automatically once they said byeeeeee
I got completely screwed. I gave 5+ years service, worked across two offices, moved country’s even at their request. They did not recognize my full tenure because legally they were able to claim separate subsidiary in that of Huge Canada. Severance absolutely needs to be addressed. My contract had a clause in there that exempted them from terminating me without cause. Moving forward before I sign anything I have my lawyer review. Lesson learned!
Such a good point, and now I will too.
I did at Ogilvy and ended up taking advantage of it. Made it all so much cleaner for everyone. I think it was 8 weeks I can’t remember the exact amount.
omnicom has a a “set policy by title/YOE” for severance so i was unable to negotiate when i was working there smh
So when there is an apparent policy like this, coming down from the holding company, does the company itself not have any wiggle room to make decisions based on individual employees? Or is this just their excuse as to why they can’t? I mean it’s the company who decided who they hire, who gets laid off, etc.
Related - anybody able to negotiate out of their severance period? Some folks with tenure have 3-9 months severance notice (both ways).
