D2 I don't disagree. I was there once completely obsessed with points. My point is that if you need to stay at a certain chain you have fewer hotels to choose from. Additionally many of the true luxury hotels don't fly under the Marriott/SPG banner.
I spend enough time on the road that I'd rather make my life easier/more comfortable when traveling for work by staying at luxury properties. I don't usually do 5 weeks of pto per year requiring hotels so I don't need many points. Three weeks of my travel is typically visiting family and friends. The calculus changes for each person.

I find people are obsessed with points. Typically younger consultants. However in almost any city every firm will have luxury hotels in the budget but you have to be willing to move outside your preferred chain. As I've traveled more I care less about the points and would rather stay at luxury properties when I can.
Park Hyatt all the way. Practically lived at the Sydney one for a few months.
@Director 1: just a hunch, but perhaps younger consultants are “obsessed” with points because they don’t earn as much as a director or manager? If he / she wants to go on vacation (for free) and / or fly comfortably (read: business or first class internationally), points is probably the main means of affording said travel for younger folks. Just something to keep in mind.

It’s interesting to see the responses and perspectives. On projects I’ve been on I’ve seen people get chewed out for staying at Luxury hotels even when rates are lower than a standard Marriott due to “optics"
Used to stay at the Ritz all the time because the client had a 150$ rate with them. Was fantastic.

OP: optics for who? Does the client get a copy of your hotel bill with invoice? Or does your manager spy on you as to where you are staying?
My worst account was when the Westin was unacceptable due to optics. The project after that one was at a lux collection. At least some balance
Four Seasons, Pan Pacific, Fairmont...if the cities I’m in don’t have those, then usually look for a Park Hyatt, St Regis, Waldorf Astoria, Ritz etc...i’ll be honest I no longer care about the points as much as before.

It would be interesting to see which firms the people staying a lux properties are from... I’d bet MBB for most, since I hear there’s a ~$500/night cap on hotel rooms...

You can get lux properties in most cities for much less than $500 with corp rates. You just need to know which hotels to look for.
