I think about this a lot, maybe too much, I admit. My theory is that we've devalued the act of writing letters. People in business today fire emails back and forth, and they're devoid of any style, they're often close to gibberish. So when it comes time to write a meaningful letter, like a considerate rejection, people just shirk the job entirely. They don't know how to competently write a letter, so they just ghost people instead.

So because we write each other so much, they write less?

It's an interesting theory. Important notes requiring thought and tact — thank-yous, rejections, bereavement — we do less, because they're too serious and we've become so superficial and shallow.

It's probably other things too. They're unqualified, insufficiently trained, cowardly, lazy, yet also likely overburdened. They're advised not to, to avoid landmines. And there's a power imbalance too.

There is an opportunity that I’m currently interviewing for that is very interesting to me. I’m interviewing two other places but I’m not responding to LinkedIn emails for other positions. Have an offer from a dream company but I'll need to go in at a lower level. Knowing that I can bring a lot of value to the company (read- I know my worth), I negotiated with the hiring manager to have a level/comp review 6 months after employment. If I hit all my goals (ie, prove myself) within that time frame, I'll get a promotion and salary adjustment.
