How early is too early to ask for a raise?
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I personally don’t like it when companies push a higher bonus over a salary increase. Bonuses or the bonus percentage are not always guaranteed and they are taxed at a higher rate than your salary. So I always push for a higher salary.
100% that you would much rather get a salary increase over a high bonus. I was simply explaining how bonuses are really taxed, which a lot of people don’t understand.
My bonus should be $19k this year, but I’ll be tickled if more than $7500 ends up in my bank account. Between the thieves in Washington and the company paying out only a fraction of the target percentage, a higher base is far superior.
It has been good and bad for me in the past. When my bonuses outran my potential salary, they changed the bonus structure. Get everything in writing, everything after that is a negotiation.
That always sounds attractive and there's just something about a bonus that seems exciting. I'm always skeptical however. Unless you're in a field that's known for generous bonuses you're essentially betting on something that may or may not pan out. At least salary is a tangible number, and you can plan around it.
The bonus is bonus is never guaranteed, the salary is. Given a choice I always go for a larger base.
Bonus by definition is not guaranteed. Unless there are iron clad guarantees around it, I wouldn’t risk taking a lower salary. Far too many variables which you cannot control which may render 12 months of effort useless during bonus time.
Wowwwww
Wowwwww
Eh. How much higher?
Salary is guaranteed. Bonus isn’t
You want the base!
What happens to the bonus if you leave before the year is out?

Probably not bc the bonus varies so much. Unless that’s your only current option.
I would normally go for the higher salary because that is guaranteed while the bonus is not. But that’s not always an option
