2nd year associate here. Has anyone made a jump from a boutique firm to big law? I found out that I’m a front runner for a gig with an Amlaw 100. I never thought I’d have this chance having graduated from an unranked law school and still being so junior. Even though the firm asked if I’d be willing to start as a 1st year given my lack of litigation experience, it’s still a monumental upgrade/ jump. I’m nervous about the culture shock and whether I’ll cut it. Could really use some advice!
Monday morning and the only thing that goes through my mind is wow I hate my job. Between the strict requirement of releasing billing time daily, high billable goal and I guess a heavy workload (and everything that comes with living through a pandemic) it’s hard to start my day excited for work. And I hate it. Makes me question why I’m doing this for a living.
Need to define diverse talent metrics to create a scorecard. Challenge is that the available data is based on opting in/out of self identification, that data point can change dramatically YOY. Any recommendations on metrics and scorecard?

Just got finished with two huge projects I had to turnover in a very tight timeframe. One of them barely had any revisions and the other got clobbered with redlines. Clearly the latter was the one I was working on at 2am. This is my very first assignment as a first year at big law and I wanted to make a good first impression. I feel like I squandered that opportunity.😣

How much value do companies place on HR experience in a specific industry? My thought is that HR is HR wherever you go, and it shouldn’t be difficult to switch industries (e.g. manufacturing to financial services), mid- to late-career. But what has been your experience?
Opportunity to pivot from Insurance Defense PI to Plaintiffs-side PI for almost 30k salary bump. If you generally like the people you currently work with would you do it? Obviously no billable hours doing Plaintiffs PI but I cant imagine their work day being any less stressful or the performance demand any less than on the defense side, especially if they are offering more money. Money is def a consideration for the move.

So the partner threatened to fire me because I don’t usually submit my timesheet daily (and I mean DAILY, he checks everyone’s timesheet at 9AM). I’m thinking about quitting because I think threatening termination for this type of pettiness is BS, and even the strictest firms I’ve worked at had a 72-hour policy. Is this common?

So my bf family originally canceled Christmas celebrations due to covid but is now planning to have a “get together” with just half the family while excluding the other half. Big law corp attorney here. I’m still junior but my health has gotten worse since starting work. I’ve always had abnormal pap smear for as long as I can remember but this year, it escalated and I just had additional testing done. Aside from that, my overall health isn’t what it used to be. I currently have my green card process ongoing with Publicis Sapient; I-485 was filed more than 180 days ago, however, the I-140 is not approved yet. If I leave for another employer at this stage, is it likely that they might withdraw the I-140 which would mean withdrawing the green card process completely? I do have a previously approved EB2 I-140 which was downgraded to EB3 I-140 in October last year and is awaiting approval.
