4th year V20 corp associate looking to switch into litigation and don’t mind starting over as first/second year at a V50. I know it’s an unusual switch and would appreciate any thoughts/advice/predictions re success of switching. For context I went to a decent law school and got decent grades (great 1L mediocre 2/3L).

I’ve seen it done by clerking. Get yourself a clerkship, then find a lit role.

like

Have you tried the lit department at your current firm? Maybe talk to a few partners there and see what they say, especially if you're willing to come in at a more junior level. The good part is you know the ins and outs of the firm and if you have a good reputation, they'll be more than happy to work with you/find a way to get you switched over even if there doesn't seem to be a need. Even if you don't have a good reputation/no reputation at all, associate retention is a high priority right now and firms will do almost anything they can to keep you if you give them a chance. This is an easy ask, so I say go for it.

like

Agree with it not being used as leverage, but it's best to have a backup in case your current firm doesn't allow you to switch to lit enthusiastically. While the corporate/adjacent groups are having a hiring bonanza, the lit groups have generally been slower this year, so don't be too surprised if your firm doesn't' allow you to switch.

What city?

New York

Im wondering the same as a 4th year lit associate who is interested in switch to transactional

I recently lateraled into Big Law. Most of my colleagues are homegrown. My shift did involve a big change in practice area, and there's work that I haven't done before that I now have to do.

But, sometimes I feel stupid here, even for work which I have done previously. It's like I'm unable to understand instructions the first time around. And I have seen my colleagues getting annoyed by that. It's like I've become dumb. In my defence, I could say they're giving half assed instructions.
