I’m about to join G! So excited! :)
Is this like a humble brag thread? Help me understand why IGAF about working at Google or anywhere else? Especially because OP “can’t really help" anyone with a referral.
This thread is designed to make high performing but low self esteem consultants think that the grass is greener or that they haven’t quite made it.
You all have made it, beyond so many stretches of your imagination.
Live within your means and be nice to people, and your life will be really good— and definitely on par with everyone else in the top earner set — where we’re all so busy comparing ourselves to one another.
@C8: Almost every job ladder has options in New York; it’s our "HQ2”. Google doesn’t like single employees to be away from their teams, so if there’s not an existing presence in NYC for the job opportunity you have in mind, they’ll politely decline.
For example, my job ladder (Strategy & Operations) has a presence in NYC on all sorts of teams — Ads, YouTube, Cloud — but not for BizOps. I might be able to transfer to NYC after serving a couple years and building a rapport, but starting there as a single employee & outside hire is apparently too much risk for Google to bear. I’m not sure that I agree with them, but will admit that having teammates around is good for morale
@C2: California, but my team has outposts in London and Singapore
By salary I actual meant total comp. Sorry for the confusion
Thanks for doing this. Do you find your role as dynamic as consulting? Tons to unpack here but every few weeks you have the opportunity to see a different industry / function in consulting
Would you be willing to give a poor IBMer a referral 😂 haha no but really, what did you do to get your position? Network, apply on linkedin, etc?
@SC2: That’s part of cloud and Diane is hiring so fast and ignoring the rest of Alphabet’s corporate structure so it’s hard to keep up. Best guess is that you’ll be governing how Cloud allocates marketing spend
@D3: Python was a holdover from undergrad that I used to analyze larger datasets when better tools weren’t available. You don’t use it every day but the average Googler is a step or two more technical than you would think is necessary since SWEs run the show
90k seems low. I joined Facebook at lowest level and second tier city without mba and my base is 30k higher. Question: Do you feel engineers look down on business/non tech people in tech firms?
@M2: 6 weeks
@A4 : Six months. If you make it to the on-site and get good scores (but the fit isn’t right for the role), you get thrown into a pool that they review before re-conducting interviews with the open public
@A4: affirmative
OP thanks for doing this AMA. Curious as to why you are voluntarily doing this? Besides that you have a kind and generous soul 😁
@C6: I was on the central team until recently, when I rotated out & took a promotion role on a divisional one
@P3: Finance has a rotation program straight out of undergrad. Same with product marketing & product managers. After that I think they look for 3-5 years of experience
@OP, thank you. I haven't been much active on fishbowl, so couldn't respond earlier. Your comments help a lot.
What skills do you feel you leveraged from consulting? Do you enjoy work at google more?
How did you get the job? Referral, blind application?
Hey OP I work in M&A as well and a recruiter
reached out for marketing finance group. Any insights on how the group functions ? Also what do you do there now ? Thanks
Any wfh flexibility? Are the majority of the roles in CA?
OP how long were you at ACN and what did you do?
