A friend is looking into taking legal action re mental health damage from a recent boss/position (which she just got terminated from) - does anyone have advice on where to start? This is in London re a London agency, client service.

Nabs have an advice line. Otherwise definitely chat to a lawyer. They’ll probably ask the friend to define what success looks like (what do they hope to achieve by taking legal action) and what they’re willing to invest if they don’t win, or put at risk to achieve it (do they want to continue in the industry?) A decent employment lawyer is going to be £250/300ph upwards but if you’re going top draw, £500-700ph).

Usual starting point is a letter to employer stating the claim (and possibly a subject access request) and basically hoping they’ll move to a settlement agreement quite quickly.

Mental health damage in itself may be tricky, having the evidence or documentation of what led to that will be important.

I started QA at the company I am currently at 3 years ago. Long story short, within 4 months at the company, I was able to make a career change and step into a PM position. Without having the formal education or PM experience, only my 5 years in QA experience. When I started I made $65k and have jumped to $78k. I have seen other companies post $100k+. There’s no reason you have to put up with a job you hate. I spent many years working in a toxic environment with a boss who gossiped and lead through fear. He wasn’t really much of a leader but basically a foreman. And he could make my existence miserable. I admit that it wasn’t easy to find another job but the bottom line is: trust your guts. If you feel something is wrong it’s because it probably is. Don’t second guess yourself. Look for options and and fight for your mental health.
