I tend to overwork myself and it’s really taking a toll on my mental well-being. I want to learn a lot and prove myself to my superiors so that they recognize me/see value. Now my work has a sense of dread to it. I watched my parents be workaholics growing up, so it’s all I know. I’m also goal-oriented and driven, so achieving a lot scratches that itch for me. But, it’s making me want to quit cause I’m burned out and depressed….im not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be helpful.

LinkedIn did this last Friday. Entire company took the day off. Really good, aware leadership.
Easier to do when your stock is trading at an ATH.

This is a common problem right now. Many people refuse to take PTO/leave right now because:
1. Taking PTO makes you look bad to leadership for not prioritizing project work, and hurts your metrics, which everyone is trying to exceed especially now given impending layoffs.
2. If you are laid off, taking PTO reduces your PTO payout which you’ll need to stay afloat when the possibility of getting another job quickly is low.
3. PTO is not well-spent now. What are you going to do, watch Netflix? Most would rather save their PTO for when things open up so they can take a real vacation.
People not taking PTO is going to result in:
1. Burnout and loss of productivity in the long-term.
2. Massive employee retention issues, especially once the economy improves.
I don’t think there’s any other solution but forced paid leave (what Microsoft did), so I’m glad they’re setting a good example.
Yes, totally agree. Trying to balance on the knife edge of burnout, but won’t take PTO as I feel it’ll
Be wasted. I don’t need to take a day to watch Netflix, that’s called Saturday.
BCG doing the same. We just need to make up for it during the weekend.
Deloitrws probably like... Mm mm nahhh billable hours sounds better
Def against peers.
Thank you! It's refreshing to see a SM share this feeling.
We are humans too. Lol
I keep saying this when talking with friends and family. It makes so much sense for our businesses to just give us a few company paid days off here and there to prevent burnout. Taking a day off when your whole team is working and emailing you — and you get the alerts on your phone and computer (which are what we use for leisure on our days off at home...) defeats the purpose. A full-stop day for all ensures we can actually get the rest and break from work
I just want the company to force us to take days off so I can actually have time off. Don’t care if uses vacation days or unpaid.
Started with Microsoft in feb and its been incredible.
My entire division got a free pto day last friday.
I’m completely permitted to work from home through at least October, despite my role being 75% travel normally.
Extremely generous wfh stipends. So far I’ve been credited $800 on standing desk and treadmill which we get annually, there’s additional programs that are covid specific.
My targets were drastically reduced for our current FY.
Three months additional PTO for parental leave due to school closures.
This is awesome. I heard about the additional 12 weeks PTO for parents impacted due to covid-19. Seriously, I think only FAANGs can offer these benefits
Many of the billable models assume employees take a certain amount of PTO per quarter [ours is roughly a week]. If your billable target is 450 hrs per quarter and you don’t take PTO - it’s very easy to run way over the target [500+]. Our model doesn’t make us any more money if we’re over and we have people on the bench and under utilized as it is. And accrued PTO is a huge financial liability to us. So yeah, take your PTO to help our spreadsheet look like our model.
We also can’t have everyone take 2 weeks at the same time in August when everything reopens.
(Yes. I appreciate all the flaws in this model)
Yes I know how the models works. I also appreciate our PTO package. I encourage my entire team including Analyst to take their whole PTO, hence why I work with them to ensure they get the hours (if available) needed to take their PTO.
I am only talking about this time. Just this covid-19 time. These few months we are locked. Also, we might be unable to do like Microsoft and have an entire team shutdown for 2 days since our clients will go nuts. But we can certainly give 2 free days, cut down billable hours by 16hours, and have people take the 2days at their own time. Something like on a Mon/Tue or Thurs/Fri. And they shouldn’t be expecting a text, or email or anything. Just like we do not receive any notification during Dec week off
I loved the mental health day which was like this is a regular day but please consider taking PTO. What?!
Our company only sent us an email reminding us May was Mental Health month... thanks.
Our team did it last week
My company did that this past Friday and my husband’s is doing it this Friday.
Do you mind sharing which company it is? I am thinking of letting my partner know so we do this for our team, and many examples will be great. Thank you

Big G is giving the Friday before Memorial Day off, so it becomes a 4 day weekend. Common in B4, but not so much in the industry. Plus, every alternate Friday is designated a “no meeting” day, and employees are actively encouraged to shut down early (by 1 or 2). Leadership does the same, so nobody feels the pressure to keep up with appearances.
Not common in Big 4. I am at Deloitte. I understand we get the entire Christmas week off. But this is more for this covid-19 time. People are stressed. I am honestly thinking of talking with my partner. I am also trying to organize a virtual bike ride session. For those of us with bicycles
Google did this too just one day, sometimes people need the company to say take the day off. How many people have unused ready to expire PTO?

Why not just take a day off if you want it? Personally, I’d rather control my own life and decisions
PwC1 - that’s awesome!! I think we just started on a wrong foot. Lol. Thanks for engaging and adding more clarity 😊
Lots of tech companies doing this. Salesforce is also encouraging org wide recovery days. Some orgs did it last Friday and some doing it the Friday before long weekend

We have every Friday off for the month of May. I am truly lucky to be in this team and company.
