Keep up and have fun! So many beginners feel intimidated because they think they’re “getting in the way” or something - you’re not! If you’re struggling and sense folks waiting on you, pick up and have a laugh. Don’t take yourself too seriously, golf should be fun
Bring lots of golf balls
Have fun!
I would say the biggest thing a beginner could do to look "golf smarter" is to know good golf etiquette. Like when it's your turn to hit a shot or putt, don't step on someone's putting line, when to keep silent, where you can or can't drive your golf cart, always have backup balls/tees in your pocket, etc.
It also depends on your group, if its a bunch of friends you don't necessarily have to keep up with all that, but if its a business function or client event, then definitely could make it appear like you know the game and you have put time into learning
Thank you!!!
Ask your playing partners to keep you honest with pace of play… there’s an etiquette to how long you should take to hit a shot, look for a ball, etc, that you’re just not familiar with. Stay positive and keep up pace of play and the rest won’t matter.
This. Be ready when it’s your turn - and a lot of folks will play “ready golf” (e.g., it doesn’t always matter whose ball is furthest or who has honors, it’s whoever is ready goes). Don’t be afraid to ask what the group prefers - communication and self awareness are pretty key.
When it is your turn, be ready with the club you want to hit and take only one practice swing. Pick a landmark to identify where your ball went - and remember it! (This is a great time to use glasses or contacts if you have them.). If you can’t find your ball, don’t spend more than a couple of minutes looking for it - just let it go, drop another one, and move on.
If you find that you are struggling to keep up or the group behind you is on your heels (self awareness, again), pick your ball up and move it with the others if you’re struggling - e.g., if you have a bad tee shot, drop with everyone else’s, if you’re struggling to get down the fairway, drop on or near the green.
Lastly, attitude is huge. No one cares how you’re playing - truly. Don’t get flustered or angry with yourself. Just move along and try not to let your last shot influence your mood for the next shot (or hole). Have fun!
Thank you all for all your tips! Had a blast with the rest of the group - they were very patient, gave me some pointers throughout and we played scramble whenever it made sense. I actually started feeling more confident (and playing better) towards the back 9! And the group behind us was pretty relaxed - we offered them to pass us early on as they were on our tail but they didn’t mind our pace despite us offering them a couple of times to go ahead. All in all, a great first outing! Now onto a few much needed lessons to continue getting better… then will hit the green again!!! ⛳️
Enjoy learning all the etiquettes (honors on the tee box, sight lines/shadows, spike marks).
And the basic rules.
