Happy to help! Remind your friend that your first job out will not be your last job. See that first opportunity as a stepping stone for the next :)
Clerk! Obviously a federal clerkship is an easy way to land a job at a top firm or the fed govt, but it’s increasingly difficult to obtain a federal clerkship straight out of law school. Here are some successful paths I’ve seen, ending at top firms:
1. District Court of Appeal —> S.D. Fla.
2. Florida Supreme Court staff attorney —> S.D. Fla.
3. State trial court clerkship (different state) —> S.D. Fla.
The clerkship route is obviously longer and probably less lucrative, but I think it’s worth it in the end. For context, I’m a Floridian who went to law school out of state and clerked for a state court judge in a different state. T2 school/ law review. Now clerking for a federal judge here in Florida and have offers from firms.
I’ve also seen many people do just one clerkship (ie, the 3rd DCA or the Florida Supreme Court) and end up at great firms.
This is very helpful. Thank you so much!
I feel like a ton of firms are hiring in my area. What city and area of law are they looking for?
Messaged you!
Have them do a mock interview- maybe they come across poorly
He has! His career center told him it’s really just that not many mid-large firms are hiring entry-levels right now and are focusing on laterals.
When I got out in 2011 I worked for the state attorney and was snapped up within two years by a large regional firm. Think outside the box. Does the practice you want deal with a certain state agency? Go work there. Deal with counties or cities? Try that.
