I e been doing content marketing since before it was called that . ;-) So a few observations.
1- there is a lot of crap content out there these days written by bots/ low paid people who are only trying to stuff as many keywords as they can into a piece without it looking like keyword stuffing ( which is an SEO no-no).
2- a lot of senior content people right now used to be journalists. Some very good ones as well as some mediocre ones. The latter typically don’t have deep understanding of the businesses they are writing for and typically do mostly fluff pieces for websites. The good ones can interview an SME a couple times, do their own research and produce a solid first draft on a complex topic, eg cyber risk. Then refine and edit with the SME to produce a product that is readable.
3-What can you do? Develop expertise in specific areas and topics. Better to pick a few to master than try and be all things. Practice. Get critiques from people you trust but who won’t sugar coat the feedback. Learn SEO. But don’t
Let it dictate everything written.
One thing you could consider to get experience/practice is an unpaid internship. Check out Acadium ( used to be GenM). I’ve had good luck there but it is mostly B2C.
Hope that helps. Good luck. Happy to continue the discussion.
Obviously you’ll be hired in at an entry level position unless you have a lot of experience that is transferable. Start reading brand books and blogs regularly (Brandstruck, brandchannel, branding strategy insider are a few). Also follow key branding and marketing people and companies on LinkedIn.
