After getting a new job offer, do you wait until your background check is cleared and the offer is no longer conditional to put in two weeks notice ?

I wait until after my background check clears and my start date is confirmed

Agree with all, and get it in writing.

In my experience after the background check clears, I’ve received an employment contract that lays out the compensation, benefits, terms of employment etc that both me and my managers at the new company sign. I don’t give notice until I’ve signed on the dotted line and neither should anyone else. The job offer can still be rescinded until something is signed.

I usually would wait until things have cleared and I have a start date. Since I’ve been moving internally lately I haven’t had to do that but in general, waiting until things clear is the safest bet

likesmart

I typically wait for confimation the background is cleared.

My last job change was the only time, I didn't wait.

likesmart

I once didn’t wait because I knew it was clean, and the background check company was backed up and my start date got pushed two weeks out and I sat home with no paycheck until it was complete. That was a lesson learned, next time I will wait until it’s back to give notice.

That happened to me as well.

Tell your current job as late as possible…..

When everything is certain and I have a start date, I’ll put in my notice. I’ve had some issues in the past, so I wait until the last minute. Anybody else put a notice in as early as possible? I think under good circumstances I wouldn’t mind giving everybody the heads up.

I'd wait for a start date to make sure all is good to go.

Absolutely wait.

Always wait for the background to clear and have a signed offer before moving forward. You don’t want to be stuck in limbo if something unforeseen happens.

I put my two weeks in as soon as I had a written offer. I was so sick of my prior company. I ended up interviewing for a completely different company a few days later and accepting their offer instead of the original one, so I was out of work for a couple weeks. I had a ton of PTO paid out from my prior job though, so it was like a long vacation where I didn’t have any work to worry about

likesmart

Absolutely!!! Best to wait until it clears.

10000% wait for the background check to clear. the recruiter pushed mine through when i said i wasn’t resigning until i had the all clear. had no reason to think i wouldn’t “pass” but i wasn’t taking the chance. sometimes your former employers don’t respond timely, which was my issue. thankfully had the paystubs so they didn’t care.

Typically the new employer will give you a start date prior to completion of the background. However, unless you have some criminal history on your background, you should not be afraid to put your notice in once an offer has been presented.

I suggest differently. In my experience, I usually get a start date and other details in an official offer letter before the background check even starts; everything is contingent upon passing the background check. However, I would not submit my resignation until the background check comes back clean. This is because:

1) I once had a background check get delayed and not returned until after my original start date. As a result, I was not paid for three weeks. This happens more often than you think.

2) Even if you have a squeaky clean background and a perfect credit score, mistakes can happen and it can be very difficult to sort them out. This has also happened to me, even though I’ve never even gotten so much as a parking ticket and I literally have a perfect credit score (850 exactly). It took me a couple of months to clear that up. In the meantime, the new employer hired someone else.

3) You may have something questionable in your background that you think or hope will not affect the decision - and then it does. This has happened to a few people I know.

In my opinion, it’s too risky to assume the new job will start on time (or at all) , so I never resign before I know everything is all clear.
