I'm hearing the rule of thumb is listing the last 10-15 years of experience, which can be 1-3 job for a lot of us older folks.
Can we get employers to remove the date requirements on the applications? Can we get the employers to remove the rate of pay required fields on the applications? If we're older, do we remember our exact rate of pay for each job 20 years ago? Can the applications have a summary section (after the required 15 years of workplace detail) where we list fields of expertise rather than jobs one by one? And are employers really looking for employees who will stay more than 4 years? Most job hop faster than a rabbit! At least you'd get great performance from an elder employee for 4 years!
A while back I took my daughter to an employment fair. One of the hiring companies there was Petco. They were opening a new store in our area and needed to fill all positions. While my daughter was talking to one of the representatives, out of curiosity I asked another one if they were hiring managers (my daughter had on the job training in management), they said yes. I asked further if they were hiring for general manager. At that point this pretty lady with very long blonde hair leaned over the table, smiled a big beautiful smile and said, “Awwww! Wouldn’t you really rather be home playing with your grandkids”? She had stated that she was the head of HR! She looked to be in her late twenties or early thirties. I was in my 50’s at the time and gainfully employed as a general manager, so while it was no skin off my back at the time, it was certainly a big eye opener how brazenly some companies skirt the law.
I think that is reflective on the current state of things. As a 24 year old my experience of the job market has been abysmal, people are lucky if they're working at all. It's interesting yet quite sobering to hear that someone with such extensive experience is stuck with such poor choices, it's same story everywhere. We need huge change.
I’m gonna be 58 in a couple weeks and yeah I have 40 years experience. I’m a GIA gemologist jeweler Maso licensed optician but the company I work for cut full-time hours and Benefits. They only seem to wanna hire the under 30 crowd part-time. It’s really frustrating. I don’t know what to do. I can’t afford to work where I’m working. I don’t make enough money. I actually make less money this year than I did last year and I got a raise go figure.
I work 2 jobs. On certain days, I work them both.
The can do it w out even being caught. They have legal teams to help managers navigate so you can’t catch them in the act!
I hear ya, I'm 57 next month, I've another 10 years of this b.s before I can retire.
I would check AARP.com for job opportunities they help with jobs
You are not alone I am going through same experience.
how true. I have done the same and receive " you are overqualified", which is basically saying the same thing. I have a brain and smart and can do what 3 people can do. I guess in today's standards you cannot have that trait. BE DUMB, TELL THEM YOU CANNOT DO IT THEN MAYBE THEN THEY WILL LOOK TO HIRE YOU. HOW SAD!!!!!!
It's rough. Your resume may not even be making it to real people. AI systems scan the doc first and it's entirely possible that if you've got more than 10 Yrs experience listed you're being filtered out.
Same, lost my job 6 months ago . I have changed my resume so many times. As soon as they see 20 years experience in any field they know you are older. Sad part the younger generation doesn't work as hard or as long as we have in our lifetime. On a zoom call the kid interviewing me ask me questions and as I answer they say wow thats great ill add that as part of our procedures but I do not get hired. It's a world where we over 50 are forced to sell everything and quietly go away.
Hi there, yes I use an AI resume too. The bots just age us by looking at the tenure of each job. I’ve have 20+ years of child care and literal customer service. I only get $ 10- 15hourly hits or I get actual sales jobs masked as customer service. Cant get around the bots, or if an actual recruiter sees your resume, they want millennials or younger. I’m 59 this summer.
All of you hang in there I was 71 when I started my latest career👍🏻👍🏻

Age discrimination is very real and very winnable in court.
Try to work for a bigger company
