I'm hearing the rule of thumb is listing the last 10-15 years of experience, which can be 1-3 job for a lot of us older folks.
Can we get employers to remove the date requirements on the applications? Can we get the employers to remove the rate of pay required fields on the applications? If we're older, do we remember our exact rate of pay for each job 20 years ago? Can the applications have a summary section (after the required 15 years of workplace detail) where we list fields of expertise rather than jobs one by one? And are employers really looking for employees who will stay more than 4 years? Most job hop faster than a rabbit! At least you'd get great performance from an elder employee for 4 years!
A while back I took my daughter to an employment fair. One of the hiring companies there was Petco. They were opening a new store in our area and needed to fill all positions. While my daughter was talking to one of the representatives, out of curiosity I asked another one if they were hiring managers (my daughter had on the job training in management), they said yes. I asked further if they were hiring for general manager. At that point this pretty lady with very long blonde hair leaned over the table, smiled a big beautiful smile and said, “Awwww! Wouldn’t you really rather be home playing with your grandkids”? She had stated that she was the head of HR! She looked to be in her late twenties or early thirties. I was in my 50’s at the time and gainfully employed as a general manager, so while it was no skin off my back at the time, it was certainly a big eye opener how brazenly some companies skirt the law.
I’m 64 and have been looking for well over a year. I have a strong skill set and several years experience. Nobody even bothers to call text or email with an offer. I have eight years before full benefits kick in for Social Security. This is a rough road.
Very difficult in academia because of DEI, If you’re a straight white male over 50 you can’t even get a phone interview. Also a case of salary discrimination. Why hire a 55-year-old with 25 years of experience when you can hire a 28-year-old brand new PhD for half-price?
Age discrimination is absolutely real. It's illegal ad hell, but that doesn't stop companies from doing it. I've seen it first hand as both an observor and as a recepient of it. One comoany I worked for forced out most of my coworkers who were over 40, despite them having glowing performance reviews. They excuse they gave was they didn't want anyone who wasn't going to be with them for 20 years at that point. Over 40? You wont make that cut. They tried it on me, took it to arbitration, won the case, and then left on my own later. One time when I was interviewing, I was outrigjt told I was "overqualified" for the position. Excuse me? I am apply for the position, have the qualifications for it, and you're telling me I am OVER qualified for it? Shouldn't that be MY choice in the application process? We both knew at that point they meant I was too old for it. Screw 'em, I know what they missed out on.
Same here definetly age discrimination
52 here. Nobody wants a 52 year old bartender. I have to be creative!
😂🤣 Kid, I SET the trends. I teach bartending, and every student I've had is now a working bartender. I just left a restaurant group in Pa, to move to California. I'm not short for work, but, getting through the interview with my birth year exposed is a challenge. Age discrimination hasn't stopped me, but, it sure slows the wheels of progress. As for country clubs, I did that my first five months in Pa. Never again. Those douchebags don't deserve quality service or my level of attentiveness.
Tell me about it! They usually want someone younger.. I have 6 yrs general manager experience and 8 years store manager experience and it’s hard
Are you in Houston?
Im 25 with 8 years in management. I can only find low paying pt. I didnt have this problem about 5 years ago. I think the influx of homes being built in our area and people flooding in from all over the country has really decreased the number of job opportunities out there. These developments were allowed in because our city councils thought it would promote growth and new better paying jobs. I find that it has done the opposite for me. This i think isnt age discrimination. Its just the lack of good jobs available now.
25??? You ain't seen nothing yet. Its bad at 40, and its impossible at 60.
I'm 63 and losing my job of 27 years. I have taken all dates of my resume and still nothing.
Sometimes I can't remember the dates because it was so long ago. Do you ever bother keeping it on the resume if it's been years?
Tell me about it. I'm 58, 30 yrs. exp in retail and been looking for anything for a year now. The best I get is four interviews and no offers. Frustrating!!
Have you looked into being a retail merchandiser.. It's something. You name your own hours.. There are so many companies out there hiring.. I worked 3 years for one and then found another that paid more which was great only didn't have the hours they said they'd have for me so make about the same.. But I mean it's flexible and that way you have some income while looking for other work.. It's not a bad job. I've had worse..
I'm 63yrs old and lost my job of over 17yrs. I have 34 yes experience in retail with 20 of those yrs in management and had a hard time finding work. I too believe its based on age.whynwould anyone pass you over for being over qualified (rhetorical question).
! because they would have to pay you higher wage and they don’t want to that’s why they go with younger people cause younger people don’t walk in asking for higher wages. They’re just happy to get a job.
Make sure your graduation dates for high school and college aren't on there. Hell, I even hesitate to verify vitals when they ask. There's no need for them to know anything unless they've hired me.
I Have the same experience here as well. Been out of work since August of 2025, updated resume with AI. Age 62, and have put in over 2000 applications in with no call backs or interviews. Even went thru job agencies as well. Its not easy in my area in Florida with the influx of people moving here with not enough jobs for the people coming in.
It's frustrating especially when you see the position you applied for reposted after you have been rejected. I'm tempted to reapply just for the fun of it. One of the interviews was for a cook in a hospital and I had to cook. I actually thought I had the job
Why why can't we do something about this? Why is it discrimination in all other areas? But not here, why did they get away with this? Why can't we have some recourse I don't get it when you get a certain age, you're expired, you're a non citizen everybody else can sue everybody else, but we're supposed to just complain, and then go stand over. There. I\n Would like to hear somebody figure out something we can do about this. Because it is pervasive.
Nothing to do, have to except reality, there is no recourse
Same here. I m over 50, have experience in hospitality administration, front of house, retails shop assistant. Trying to look for a job in London, but there is real age discrimination! They asked about age and some even told me that position is suitable for young students.
They should understand, besides the age, reliability, stability, experience are also very vital.
"position is suitable for young students." = "The salary is so low that it is only suitable for people who are still living with their parents and who have no bills to pay."
I'm 42 and feeling the ageism squeeze.
It's deeply pathetic on the part of those corporations and businesses that do not view us as the wealth of knowledge that we are. They don't realize how much it hurts the entire market. AI will not replace true community elders or mentors. But I say let them cut their noses off, it only hurts them.
I havebeen looking for over a year. I have had a few lower end interviews waking away feeling good and then never hear anything. Its tough being old. expecially whenyou just want to work.
I never believed anyone when they would tell me they have been looking for a job for over a year but now I understand as I am 60 years old with lots of experience and I have been applying for a year ans half. I literally have applied to at least 100-150 jobs with probably 4 interviews and no offers. How does one look into the legal (illegal) part of discrimination?
They all lie and say age is not a factor, but it is a huge factor as they do not want anyone over 40 added to their insurance premiums regardless of how qualified you're for the position and often times the hiring manager is 20 years younger than you and discriminates against you because you have twice as much work experience as they do the few times I have gotten called for in person interviews I can see the look on their faces as soon as I walk in and know I have no chance because I am of a certain age
Work with an employment lawyer. Many of them know ways to "prove" discrimination and can even help you collect evidence. Age discrimination law suits pay well over $100k and you can make a career out of it,like a first amendment suditor.
I turned 49 this year. It took me 8 months to find the job i am at now, and was lucky to even get that(low lvl job too) it has never been so hard to find work before, and as i am a year away from the big 5-0 i know itll get even harder.
I am blessed to have been able to retire. Nobody wants an older salesperson. 35 plus years in sales and pushed out by a younger manager…It’s a sad fact about America.
