Really hate to say this. Get an interview. Do well on the cases. Act like someone I could put int front of a client. Mission accomplished.
Also my beef with MBA...anybody who works in tech knows u don't need an advanced degree to do this work, u need hands on skills. Once u understand how this stuff works u can see architecture and clearly identify business needs. iT strategy is just a higher level of thinking and truly understanding the high level business needs of how technology can improve their business or solve whatever problem they're trying to solve. It can get into data modeling and presenting the numbers to c suite execs too, which is another skill set on its own, but I highly doubt u need an MBA to learn it. There's my midnight rant. Good night, folks.
Check out BCG Digital Ventures if you're interested in design thinking.
MBA
I'm a cloud tech specialist (with a top 25 MBA) and I made the jump from a boutique firm. LinkedIn networking worked me for. Did my research (searching and talking to people) to figure out who to message; sent messages and got in the door. I don't think my MBA hurt, but I'm the only person in my group with one. Definitely not a req. We have options and BCG has a digital strategy group (BCG Digital Ventures), but I don't think Bain has a ton in this area. @B1 can correct me if I'm wrong. If you have the tech skills and you are someone I'd put in front of a client, you'll have a great shot. The problem is that tech skills and being client facing don't often come in the same package.
BCG1 How do you get that prized interview thought?
Have u guys tried applying? LinkedIn even has the recruiter listed on the job reqs. Just reach out and see what happens. Also Mck digital labs has a lot of tech reqs which might not be MBA specific if ur interested. BTO might not be very MBA heavy, but they do like advanced degrees
Talk to people to get an interview. Network your way in through LinkedIn. Once you get someone to refer you, you'll get an interview.
Get an MBA
You'll find it extremely difficult to get an interview for a generalist position. You're best applying for a specialist position, most likely at McKinsey.
Is McKinsey doing anything interesting around design thinking and innovation strategy these days?
