I’ll go first: this might be unpopular but I’m not binary on the topic like I used to be. Now I’m a sliding scale since I just had my first baby. It’s a lot of work! I have a loving husband and I’m well-resourced with finances and family.
For women who are raped I will always support what she chooses. She should not be obligated to raise a child forced upon her if she cannot afford to (financially or emotionally).
Moving along the spectrum, although I think it’s irresponsible, women who get pregnant consensually but are poor, single, and not able to care for a child appropriately get a pass bc the likelihood that an unwanted child will be properly guided to a good, contributing life is so low (for all the pro-life talk from conservatives, they are quick to want to put the very same unwanted children into prison for crimes, or criticize how these unguided children become. Do Christians really show up for the unsupported in their community via adoption or mentorship? Do they really get their hands dirty? Not really. But they don’t understand the implications of abortion bans in this case.
And finally on the other end of the spectrum, I have to work *hard* to suppress the frustration I feel when my privileged, educated peers in consulting or FAANG talk about their right to abortions if their contraception fails simply because they aren’t emotionally ready, although they are in the 1%.
All I ask tho, in my sliding scale, is for honesty. If there is a heartbeat, abortion is in fact murder. That’s is an inconvenient scientific truth that the left can really get confused about bc it’s hard to admit. So if you have an abortion after a heartbeat, no matter where you fall on my sliding scale, you at least must be honest with what you are actually doing.
At the end of the day, these are the times when our reactions matter most. These are the days when our reactions reflect or deflect Christ the most. Our one job is to love others. So on this day when social media is super charged on both sides, what does love require of us? Today, and maybe for the rest of the week, my reaction will be to shut up and listen. And just love and accept anyone and everyone, including their decisions, whether or not I agree with them. If Jesus did not come to the world to condemn it, then neither will I.
I love it. Praising God today.
Rising Star
As a Christian, elated that this ruling means that more unborn babies are protected from murder from this point onwards. Although there is still much work to be done.
As a citizen, I’m glad that rightful meaning has been restored to the Constitution. Legal scholars on both sides of the issue acknowledge that there were serious legal issues with the original Roe v. Wade ruling. Even Ruth Bader Ginsburg acknowledged it.
Now the power to regulate abortion is rightfully returned to the people and their elected representatives.
If you want talking points, point out to people that large majorities of Americans do want restrictions on abortion (Roe v. Wade swept away thousands of nuanced state and local laws, and legalized abortion on demand). Most Americans don’t support 2nd or 3rd trimester abortions. Most Americans do believe that unborn babies deserve protection.
The biased news media would have you believe that most people are 100% pro-abortion, but that is simply not true. Most Americans opposed unlimited abortion.
In terms of legislating, point out to them that the Democrats have had undivided control of Congress and the Presidency at multiple times in the past 50 years, including filibuster-proof Senate majorities. The most recent one was under Obama. And they DID NOT choose to codify Roe-style abortion access into law. That is because they know that that would be deeply unpopular with most Americans. Now they are trying to blame conservatives for what they themselves CHOSE NOT TO DO.
The older I get, the more apparent it is too me that I wasn’t honestly raised by my community, which is pro-life. E.G., Bob Jones university and racial segregation, using abortion as a rallying cry for the Moral Majority, etc.
The more I’ve learned about the past, the former the conclusion I’ve come to that abortion is used by politicians to drive voter turnout and engagement, as opposed to meaningful spiritual debate.
Finally, to those who celebrate RvW getting overturned, you’ve “won the battle, but lost the war”. No atheist/non-believer can sincerely trust you have their best interests at heart after you’ve thrust your theology on them. Congratulations on turning the church into a place of judgement and damnation, I expect to see many more people to leave the church.
State school grad myself! Was referring to general past of evangelical/mainline Protestant circles role in not teaching a comprehensive history of abortion. I am a Christian.
This is about a woman’s body and her right over her own body. This ruling is not about the right of unborn babies. Otherwise they would have child support start at conception, etc.
It’s a large setback for society and for women. We have no place telling others what to do with their bodies.
I am glad somebody else is confused on this whole woman’s body thing!! We (men and women) don’t know when this body turns into dust…. What right over this dust are we talking about ? !!
I don’t like that people make it a religious thing. If you think it should be banned because of the Bible, I disagree because not only does it not say anything directly about it in the Bible, but we shouldn’t push Bible doctrine on others
The question is whether it’s a life or not, if it is, then you should protect it whether you’re a believer or not, no different than how you can’t kill another human. I actually don’t know where I fall because I don’t know whether it’s a life, if it is, I fall in the pro-life of course
Our world is broken. One thing may change yet so many other pieces of our system that fail. Jesus is our only solution. And i continue to fight for life, support for those in need, and love for all.
50 years later.. it marks the Year of Jubilee!! Freedom from child sacrifice to idols of convenience and $
I'm pro-life and I am not sure how I feel about the overturning of this law. Yes, on one hand, this decision might save many lives. On the other hand, it really does seem like a strange time for this to be occurring. It makes me feel like this is more about control than anything. Because if it was really about the babies, wouldn't we have more legislation to help support mothers that are in need?
I believe abortion is murder, and I will never consider myself pro-choice, but I tend to be more libertarian these days. Restricting/Prohibiting tends to make things worse while nurturing and fostering our society & culture to support mothers & their babies so they don't feel like they need to make these decisions would probably result in better outcomes.
I hear ya. Especially that last statement <3.
I wish that abortion could be safe, legal and rare. If the mothers life is in danger, I would like her to have this choice without fear of external consequences. But, we've seen that in millions of cases, abortion has become an act of choosing convenience/personal preferences over the life of the child. In NYC a few years ago, the health department reported that 2/3 of pregnancies in the black community resulted in abortion. This is a terrible tragedy. So, it is clear that abortion, under the RvW regime, was out of control and we can't be trusted to use it for medical reasons only.
