I’m in my 6th year at the firm and haven’t been promoted yet. It’s really hard in IFS. But I came into the firm as a senior manager. There aren’t enough director roles in my area in the firm, and you can’t get promoted in your current role. You have to wait for a headcount at the higher level to open, then apply for it. Did they explain that to you when you transferred? So you really have to remember IFS is entirely different. I work for partners younger than me.
Life is more than promotions.
What are you working for? Is it a means in and of itself? You have to sort out what you are aiming for and I don’t mean the next promotion. What is your purpose?
Find that and you’ll stop caring so much about your title and paycheck.
May I ask why you left advisory? I would love to get into a LoS as I feel IFS is a dead end unless you know the right people. Also, advisory doesn’t have many Senior Managers, right? Would a director role have been within reach previously?
... no intention of going back to advisory. But still stings. Just found out someone who was a year junior to me when we joined just made director while I am still senior manager. No clue if I can make director anytime in the near future.
Can I chat with you OP?
Thank you everyone for the advise. It's just that when I was brought in last year, RL assured me of a director promotion in the year end. Afterwards I was told it was a difficult year so promotion didn't happen. I just feel a bit cheated. If I was told not to expect a promotion anytime soon, I would have set my expectations accordingly. But being assured of a promotion and then to have it taken away felt disappointing.
P1 - wow that's crazy. I wish they would do a better job of setting expectations upfront.
I’m in L&D and it feels like a dead end
Sounds like the rest of the firm. Nepotism is alive and well every where.
