One thing to think about also is your concept of “living in one of the greatest cities in the world”, NYC as a father of 2 is a lot different than a young 20 something. I’d almost suggest taking like 3 trips there over 2 years versus relocating. But definitely understand no time is better than now if you want to live there.
I suggest Jackson Heights as a good target. You’ll likely find Astoria too expensive. In JH you can find a 2 bed apartment in the 2-2.5k range, reasonable schools and daycares, good extra support at reasonable rates, and a good mix of cultures. Commute to LGA is incredibly short, JFK is reasonable. Midtown is decent on the 7/E.
However, do your math and know your costs. Don’t get surprised by any expense item - it’s all learnable from a distance. Daycare, transit, food, after-Care, rent, utilities, parking, taxes... map it all out. 110 is possible - but with 2 kids in tow that could prove tighter than you want.
If you need less expensive, look further out into Forest Hills. Though at some point you hit minimum. Brooklyn has options like Ditmas Park and Midwood as well
Yup raising kids in NYC to me would be hard. I lived in NY for many years when I was single and it was great to explore but now that I’m married with kids and live in the DC area I think it’s a much better deal. I can still take the kids up to NY to experience all of it but have free access to better schools, parks, etc. NY is also quite expensive
That's a tough one at 110K. Don't forget S+L taxes going to above 10%, too. You probably can find a reasonable apartment in Brooklyn, but anyways will be spending over 2K/mo for a 2BR, and probably not be in the best area. Manhattan is hard to find a reasonably priced place.
I lived there on a project in a corporate apt and it was pretty expensive. Loved the experience. Maybe you can switch firms and get an adjusted pay for that market. Deloitte won't give you a COLA if you move to NYC. Start negotiations by bumping your base ask by at least 20%. Remember: salary history is a banned question for NYC employers.
M1 - I come from Atlanta. Bored with this place. Looking to move. Even if I do don’t plan on staying in New York for more than a year or 2. But seriously considering it. If not now, I feel like it’ll never happen
I have two kids and have single income in nyc. I make 125k and spend more than I make. You’ll want to make at least 170 to get by comfortably in nyc with 2 kids.
I was to live in and experience the greatest city in the world at least for 1 to 2 years in my life.
I don't have any experience with NYC, but "single income" is pretty vague. The income of an associate is pretty different than that of a partner.
And is there anything you're looking for specifically beyond just the feasibility with a specific income? Help us help you.
I earn around 110 base bonus is about 4 to 5% min. Just looking for areas In the City that is good for kids. Walking distance from schools/grocery/station etc.
What about areas like Astoria or flushing?
Yeah, you probably could find something Queens, too. Flushing will have great immigrant food (esp Chinese!), but also be a bit tougher. Astoria has some nice pockets and less nice pockets. Your wife will need to think of whether she feels safe walking with them while you're at work.
Terrible idea IMO
What city are you coming from? Enter that into an online cost of living calculator and see how you would fare with your lifestyle
D1 - all the trips i take are to NYC. My wife and I love that city.
Westchester. Also, look for areas that have good schools since you have kids. It is a great city in the world but I focus more on kids education. In general the property I buy must meet these criteria in order of priority
1. Good schools
2. Should appreciate in value at 5-10% each year
3. Views (in NYC it comes at a large premium)
4. Proximity to work
Maybe try it. You guys sound pretty mobile, so go for it. I would be worried if your two kids were in and out of different schools though, but that probably depends on age. I personally feel I would struggle from a cost perspective
M1 - that’s my concern. And yes, we are pretty mobile. I make sure I don’t have a lot of stuff with me. Very minimalist lifestyle. Trying to raise my kids also the same way. We can literally pack all our belongings into a medium sized truck. The only big things that I have are my couch, bed and dresser. I try to not keep things that I don’t need with me
Come to Philadelphia! It’s awesome, affordable, great food and music scenes, and only and hour / hour and a half from NYC! Happy to share a tonne more info if it sparks you interest.
@D1 - maybe I’ll move to Philadelphia after my 1 year or so in New York. My idea/goal is to live in NYC for a while and eventually move either to New Jersey/Boston/Philadelphia as my kids grow older.
I was out on the Port Washington LIRR line with one kid. We got along with one car. We loved exploring the city! But once #2 arrived, we realized NY was unsustainable on $106,000. We moved back to DC burbs (Silver Spring)
