With kids, one thing you could look into is the capital one venture x card. It gives you a better priority pass than amex plat and is decent for travel. Not quite as much as amex plat but at least it's a visa.
Alternatively, is there an airline you fly a lot? Or hotel chain you stay with primarily? If yes, airline or hotel specific cards could work too so you could work towards consistent upgrades.
I second the amex plat+chase Sapphire reserve strategy, but sign up for them separately and make sure to get the signup bonuses for a huge initial boost in points. There's alternative versions of the amex plat (regular, Charles Schwab) so do research on what works best for you. They're considered separate cards so you could get both (get one, get the signup bonus, cancel after a year and get the other one) for additional points. Make sure to target all time high signup bonuses if you can.
Also none of these are particularly good for gas. If you bank with bank of America and are a preferred awards member, you can get 3.75%-5.25% cash back for one category of spending. You can make multiples of the same card, so I have a separate boa cash rewards card made that I use only for gas that I get a good chunk back on!

I actually really like my X1. Points are gimmicky, but it has a lot of nice features.

Chase Sapphire Reserve + Chase Freedom Unlimited.
To be extra clear, it’s the Freedom UNLIMITED that gives you 1.5x on all purchases. The Freedom (no Unlimited at the end) gives you 5x on various categories that rotate each quarter. So, if the purchase is in a Freedom category, use that for 5x. If it’s travel or dining, use Sapphire Reserve for 3x. For all else, use Freedom Unlimited for 1.5x. Collect your 1.5-5x on each purchase, transfer it all to the Reserve, and profit :)

Where do you live? And do you eat out a lot? I found the platinum terrible for my lifestyle since I eat out a lot in NYC. The gold would be better, but I went chase sapphire reserve. Furthermore, recently was in Austria and many stores (including McDonald’s) didn’t accept AMEX. What’s the purpose of a travel card if it doesn’t work abroad? I liked the overall benefits with the Reserve (1:1 points, annual travel credits, etc.)
Very helpful to know. We don’t eat out much and I live a bit outside Washington, D.C. I was focusing more on trying to find what would give the best travel benefits.
Chase Sapphire and Capital One Venture!! Depending on what perks you want each has cards with lower or higher annual fees (reserve vs preferred and venture vs venture x) but both have nice perks. The Capital One Venture specifically surprised me because it has a lower annual fee ($95) but you get 75,000 points after spending 4K in 3 months, you get 2 passes to their lounge in DFW a year, Hertz Gold status, reimbursement on TSA Precheck, and can use your miles to “erase” travel related purchases. The Chase Sapphire Preferred (or Reserve) is also great because of the perks but the best part about Chase cards imo is that you can transfer your points to so many great airlines and hotels. The chase cards also generally have great travel protection and baggage delay insurance.

Amex platinum is only good for perks (lounge access, fine hotels resort collection). If you want a points card, I recommend the chase preferred or amex gold. I have the chase and amex platinum. Chase is amazing.

Yeah i gave up on Amex plat bc of cost and benefits inflation
Depends on what you like to do. If you eat out often, get Amex Gold. If you order from Amazon constantly, Chase Amazon card. If you travel a lot and fly the same airlines each time, get their co-branded card. If you stay at hotels often, stick with one brand and get their co-branded card. If you travel a lot and want elite status, get the Amex Platinum.

Independent of any cash back or miles rewards if you want to travel in Europe you need a MasterCard or VISA.
Capital one Venture. I regularly pay for flights / hotels around twice a year. Vacations pay for themselves!

Citi double cash does 2 percent cash back on all purchases if paid in full each month (which you should do anyway). Maybe not as optimized as some of the points cards but it is super simple and nets me an extra 200-300 bucks a month since i use it for anything that can be put on credit.

Ni i get it. A big part is my rental company accepts credit card payment with no fees and i live in a HCOL area.
Chase sapphire
Use my Alliant Visa Signature as my base card for 2.5% cash back (many cards offer 2% but few offer 2.5%). Also have Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend, Discover it, Citi Custom Cash, and US Bank Cash+ and rotate through the 5% categories. None of them have annual fee.
I am all about the Cash back. The perks of the travel cards do not really justify them to me.
Also have an Amex Blue Cash. It offers some added cash back on supermarkets, but the added perks (i.e. extended warranty, rental car coverage) including their customer service of AMEX is best (even though some of my other cards offer comparable benefits on paper. Also no annual fee
