Any sense of expected pay for in-house Associate Counsel at a start up? I meet the experience requirements but they are asking for my range and I have ZERO sense of what NYC in house counsel startup comp is like! Any help/ideas? Over under 120? Just need to figure out a comp range.

I’d ask them for their range instead so you can get idea where they are at and see if it works for you before you respond.

Attorney 2, is your range for a base or for a total comp? What about equity? Thanks!

I would just tell them “I make x now and am looking for something similar”. I doubt they’re going to laugh you out the door, and if they say “we think half of that” then you know. But you can’t sound that crazy referring to what someone else in the employment market is willing to pay you. If it’s truly a start up, they may not know what “typical pay” is either. There’s no such thing as “typical pay” for in-house jobs, honestly, especially at a start up. There’s in-house jobs that pay less than 6 figures and there’s in-house jobs that pay more than biglaw.

Thanks all this was extremely insightful

I’d recommend you also indicate that you are open to discuss alternative compensation incentives, too.

Hello people, how common is a Amazon to PWC move ?
I’m interviewing for a Senior Associate role and TC seems to be more competitive than role in L5.

TC $114k- Base AMZ- $73k +$38kstocks ( vesting 17k$ due next year)

TC $135k Base PWC -$81$ + Bonuses ( 50k$)

Looking for managerial skills which the PWC role avails, and L6 promo doesn’t seem to be happening soon in current role. I’m also mentally stretched. I hear WLB in PWC is just as busy but can anyone confirm if this move makes any sense. Google Amazon

I did mention I have interest in a specific area with a director last week and it looks like this next director I’m interviewing primarily works in that area.

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.

For those working in house, how much “from scratch” document drafting are you doing vs. reviewing and revising “outside documents”. For example, if your company wants to enter into a joint venture company with another entity, are you drafting the company agreement “from scratch” or is it based on internal forms? Or are you getting outside counsel to do it?
