Any thoughts or perspective on the work life balance at Orrick? I’m curious whether people’s billable hours actually end up falling near the 1950 requirement or whether they go way over and it’s just more of the same grind as the places with no req and reputations of long hours.

I can only speak for my group (regulatory), but my sense is that ppl either don’t meet their hours or hit right around 1950/2000. I haven’t heard of too many ppl going way over. That said, it is biglaw so if work needs to be done the expectation is that it will be (e.g., you can’t hit your hours and peace out)

It’s very group dependent. When I was there (E&I) I had some 2200+ years

likesmart

Also to add (similar to A1’s point) how the 1950 will feel depends greatly on groups and clients. You can still have short timelines that blow a weekend, evenings or series of weeks, followed by not enough hours during actual business hours, such that 1950 isn’t all that different of a lifestyle

Like everyone except Milbank, they’re midlaw until they match.

What is your group? I would say most people hit pretty close to on target. A few people, mostly those gunning for partner, go way over. A lot of people are on reduced schedules as well

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

Billables are low this month. Like I have 65 billable hours in so far. I’ve messaged partners over the last week to try and get more cases but there are tons of new associates who were just onboarded and were at a low point for business. I’m freaking out

There’s a practice group that I’ve been trying to find work in but whenever I volunteer to help, I always get roped in to do non billable work. In the beginning it was fine but now I’m feeling it’s never going to amount to actual work. Any tips to get more involved without all the non billables and how to approach this gently?

Received a job offer. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a concern I had about it. It's an entry level position, and I don't have much experience. The billables are 2040 a year. For billable hours in civil litigation and insurance defense, is 2040 hours for a 1st year associate on the high end in this field for a small or midsize firm? It seems like most attorneys I know have minimum requirements of around 1800. The compensation is around 80k a year.
