Maybe the recruiter should have handled it better, but you had the opportunity to answer questions better too.
When they asked about the company, you could have given your baseline answer BUT then added what it was about Lazard that interested you.
When they asked about growth and advancement, you could have told her what you are doing personally to improve (pursuing certifications, utilizing company L&D resources, networking, etc.).
You said that the answer you gave was “more than fine” but obviously it wasn’t to the recruiter. Take a step back and look at the interaction again and make some changes for next time.
Sounds like you were giving generic answers, and if I was the recruiter I would have expected more as well. The market is extremely competitive right now, and generic just doesn't cut it anymore.
That does sound rude, but some of these firms really just have that kind of brusque culture. And they're not looking for ordinary employees, they're looking for fanatics (well, they would call them extraordinary candidates). We can scoff at that, but that's the way they are, and if you want to work for them that's the way you have to be. While it was a weird experience, do some reflecting on it and think about how you could hone your answers and your approach.
I am sorry to hear you had that experience. I haven't interviewed with them before but it definitely sounds like the recruiter was having an off day.
Why else would anyone look for a job? 🙄
Also asked what I’m doing about my growth and advancement and I said
I’m Job searching. She then said she doesn’t think I’ll Be a good fit and I just hung up
