Being kind to yourself, routines don’t always work with ADHD, electric toothbrush helps a lot, doing it 10 seconds is better than none, it’s ok if you don’t do 2min every time, dry shampoo, body wipes, make it accessible and functional for you. And this doesn’t mean that hygiene isn’t important, it’s just that shame and guilt because it’s harder to maintain “normal” routines isn’t helpful to actually functioning

Thank you.
Establishing routines is key in helping these things become automatic.
Yes! And having things set up so that one routine triggers another- eg my medications are already doses out for the week and the pill box is right next to my toothbrush, so when I brush my teeth I see the pill box and that prompts me to take my medicine.
No. I created my bathroom to be very inviting, maybe that helps. I can be done with my entire routine and shower in <10 min, sometimes I take longer intentionally if I want to relax.
1) water flosser - so fun/easy to use -takes 2 seconds
2) electric toothbrush
3) Jo Malone diffuser for smell - like a fancy hotel
4) Nice bath products, including body scrub so it makes me want to shower.
5) lotion and body oil on the edge of bathtub so it’s easy to apply.
6) good quality towels
7) bathrobe
There are things you can find on Amazon to create a steam shower with different scents. I put it in the tub while I shower. I like Eucalyptus.
There’s SO much benefit in designing our spaces to be as comfortable and pleasant for ourselves as possible! How to avoid using your bed as a couch? Make your living room a place you genuinely want to be. Mine is full of soft fabrics, colors I find soothing, and I have no shame about the slight dent in my couch in the one spot I always sit. Same for the bathroom. What do you wish your bathroom was like? How can you close the gap a little from what it’s like now to an oasis like SM1 created for themselves?
Too often we design our homes around the experience we want our guests to have and not what WE want and need. Prioritize yourself! And remember, for any nay-sayers or people who’d see it as silly, “if it’s dumb but it works, it’s not dumb!”
I remind myself that even 1% is better than 0%.
Dry shampoo is better than nothing, even if I don’t manage to wash my hair.
A makeup wipe is better than nothing, if I can’t manage to do my full skincare routine.
A meal bar or protein shake is better than nothing, if I can’t manage to eat/make/procure a full meal.
Mouthwash and a floss pick are better than not brushing your teeth at all.
Drinking soda or anything else is better than nothing if you forget to drink plain water.
There is almost always a ~1% version of any task you feel unable to give 100% to, and that 1% will literally always be better than 0%.
You don’t have to be perfect, and you shouldn’t even strive for perfection if you can help it. Doing SOMETHING is so, so much better than doing nothing.

I always have to pee in the morning and I don’t let myself leave the bathroom until I’ve done the minimum according to George Carlin
(Armpits, A$&hole, Cr0tch, and Teeth (but not in that order)).

Haha the order comment made me chuckle. Ty
I have used checklists of daily hygiene things like brushing, flossing, washing dash, etc., in the order they should be in for morning and evening. I get a little dopamine boost when I check off each thing as a “done” item, so having the list motivates me, and having the list in order of operations helps with executive function issues.
I always use hygiene as the way I reset my day so I’ve reframed it slightly - when I’m having a freeze or I’ve not focused and I need to snap out of it, I use a shower as that reset tool. Now I see it as a helping hand rather than an essential!
I have a childhood trauma of kids saying I smelled. It was in 7th grade algebra class, the girl behind me said it, and the girl to her left laughed. Since then fear drives me into the shower
I can’t imagine, this was me when I was working remote between 2012-2015. Though you grow out of those habits by forcing yourself to adopt other routines. Not sure if you’re hybrid or remote. I find when I have to go somewhere or make plans to go somewhere it forces me to take care of myself. Also, if you’re not getting enough sleep of course you’ll be too tired and exhausted to take care of yourself. Can happen to anyone for any reason.
