I started off as a litigation associate and made the switch to conflicts counsel early on in my career. More junior folks in those roles start off by assessing conflicts and drafting waivers. Depending on the firm, you might also be involved in the new client approval process, drafting engagement letters, negotiating OCGs, and conducting due diligence. It’s a great fit for attorneys who like a very fast pace with no lingering projects or billable requirements. As you go up the chain, it becomes an advisor to the attorneys type role on all things ethics as an AGC or similar. If you are an empath and like getting to yes, you’ll be thrilled with the position. Be careful to join firms that respect the role- not all firms have a culture of respecting these roles. But the ones that do absolutely see your worth and it’s led to a great career path for me with no billable pressure or client development requirement. Each firm is different on pay scale and work expectations and both run the gamut so just be mindful of what you’re looking for if you want work life balance or if you want to max out pay-wise. Every day is a different challenge and I’m never bored- and I love that projects don’t linger for the most part.
Yes going on 3 1/2 years now and I love it, best move I could have made. I was burned out from the practice of law and hated it and nearly left law altogether but the conflict attorney role for me was a GameChanger and life saver.
Very helpful! What do you enjoy so much about the role? I’m asking because I’m currently feeling a lot of burnout and overwhelm as a litigation associate handling way too many cases and know I don’t want to do this long term.
