Anyone in house attorneys willing to share what bring them to this bowl? A lot of us at firms look at in house as the light at the end of the tunnel, but I have to wonder if being a lawyer is still being a lawyer. Any pros and cons to seeking in house before instead of pivoting entirely?

Being a lawyer is still being a lawyer, even if it’s in-house. It comes with its own stressors like being asked to do more variety of work, not having support, and making decisions on the fly/without taking the time to analyze like you would at a firm. I moved in-house looking for greener pastures but I feel totally overwhelmed. I’m not sure if it’s in-house in general or where I wound up (at tech company), but I’m looking to pivot to something else. What that something else is, I don’t know.

I moved in-house largely by accident. I was pretty sure I didn’t want to practice anymore, but an in-house role fell in my lap and I figured “sure, why not try”. My hours are, on average, lower & more predictable, but I have way less support and I still work 90+ hour weeks sometimes. (The worst week, hours-wise, of my career happened in-house) I’m also expected to have a lot broader expertise, which some might love but it makes me super anxious. (I was a specialist at my firm).

Less support staff, more meetings, constant change in the processes, and even the corporate structure. Changes that require duplicated efforts on my part and are "effective immediately."

I work extra hours doing the jobs they don't want to pay staff to do. Med chrons, research, etc.

Former prosecutor turned in-house with a multinational public company. Role literally fell in my lap and didn’t want to pass up the opp. 4yrs in I’m bored. Hrs are very manageable. Work is 70% transactional 30% lit. management. But, the thought of having to redline t/c’s contracts for the rest of my life is depressing. I hate sitting behind a desk all day dickering terms that by and large will never come into play. There’s more to life than force majeure.

Would you mind sharing your experience as a prosecutor

Thank you! It’s helpful to get more perspective on this. I worked in government before and experienced similar feelings of less support staff, more meetings, not a lot of training etc. I’ve had thoughts about whether to stick it out until in house, but know from past experience outside a firm that some demands of being a lawyer are universal.

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. I’m so miserable every day is painful. I want to go tell pre-law school me it’s not worth the debt because you will hate this career and then feel trapped by the debt. I have been a practicing (patent prosecution) lawyer in different firms for about 20 years. I would love to do something more creative but still techie (computers, telecom, apps, etc.). I've always been interested in improving the software that practicing lawyers use (whether patent-specific or not). I am also kind of an academic at heart, but I live in a locale where professorial jobs are pretty limited and we're rooted here now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless
