Anyone leave their intense law firm job and do doc review for some time in order to have more time to figure out their next non-legal career step?

I bounced after five years (big law), rode my motorcycle to LA and back to NYC and then started selling motorcycles. I did some discovery (higher paying than 1L review) to keep the lights on to cover some gaps. Been out longer than I was in, and I am both a better human being and happier.

I have, but doc review pay wasn’t sustainable for me and I ended up back at a firm. A similar approach with higher pay is contractual work. I’m in the process of doing this now to work in-house through Hire Counsel.

like

AA1, I keep my LinkedIn profile up to date and set up to let recruiters know I’m seeking work. I get a good amount of interest from recruiters there and try to be very responsive. I also periodically apply for positions through agencies like Hire Counsel and Robert Half Legal. Even if you don’t get the advertised position, they keep your resume on file and email you with other opportunities. Be responsive to them as well even if just to say you’re not available or it’s not a great fit. My current contract role is in-house and has helped me gain a lot of traction with transitioning to a full time in house position. All the best!

No but I’ve thought about it

like

If you're thinking of doing this I work for Thomson Reuters, the pay is on par if not better than most doc review projects and the benefits are really great. They hire a most constantly and it would be easier to sell to Future employers than doc review positions would be. Private message me and I can talk more about the compensation / any questions / generator referral email for you

I have been thinking a lot about this but haven’t made the jump.

Also thought of this but don’t have that next non legal concrete hah

I haven’t been at a firm but came from state government work and have been doing doc review with a few different companies the last year and a half. With my personal finance issues (spending more than what I should/personal debt), it’s not sustainable for me long term, but I’m also doing a masters degree so for the time being it’s a place holder. The highest paying doc review I’ve worked with so far is Price Waterhouse at $32/hour. I’m curious what companies might pay more than that- if anyone has any recs.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling.
