Didn’t quit, got laid off. Depending on the market you’re in, there isn’t a ton of freelance rn. Most agencies have been relying on internal resources because of budget cuts. So if you’re not connected, or even if you are, it’s not the best time.
Unless you are absolutely miserable and have a really healthy savings account, I wouldn’t quit your job right now. There aren’t a lot of freelance gigs and if there are, they’re lowballing day rates. Most of us are barely scraping by.
Rough. Very rough. But I’m happier than I was at the agency.
My credit score begs to differ.
I quit my freelance job to go full-time. Does that count? ; )
You prob got a notification just now saying a CD found your reply funny. That was me. 👍🏼 ;-)
I didn’t quit, I was laid off, but I’ve been working pretty steadily, I just had to open myself up to doing whatever came my way, even if it’s sometimes content writing or copy editing. It’s actually been kind of fun, and way less stressful, and I’ve still been able to produce a couple of things and work on a big brand or two. Not sure I’ll ever go back to agencies now. I haven’t had to lower my rates at all, but I live in a smaller city and my rates aren’t nearly as high as NYC.
If you don't get laid off you won't get unemployment. There's no work, if there is work it's applied to by dozens of others. I have a solid book with a good network but haven't gotten anything substantial since Feb. I had 6 months of savings before, whee I wouldn't have gotten to do anything fun but would have survived. Fun like, buy a bottle of wine. Also my crappy health insurance was 670 a month and forget it if you need a psychiatrist for any meds.
I'm also in Brooklyn for context
