I won't do anything for less than I'm making right now. Base is guaranteed. RSUs require a commitment by the new company to not screw me over to the point of me wanting to leave before vestment... so... starting my pay lower than my current wage gives a clear indication as to how that is going to run.
Caveat: It would be possible to get me real close to my current salary with an enormous amount of stock options to get me to consider. I'd need a clear indicator that the vesting schedule comes out to my favor within 3 years.

This is a profound misunderstanding of RSUs…
Yeah, I moved from B4 to G. Took a hit on base (~$30K) but the stock makes up for it. However, with Big Tech, one usually doesn’t sell the stock, hold them due to the rapid growth being seen. If the base is enough to survive and lead a decent life, it’s well worth making the jump.
Wow. 300k worth of stocks? If that is the case the TC would still be higher but base would remain a little lower. Good for you Google 1. Thanks for the info.
I interviewed for this role a couple of years ago and had heard WLB was not good and required a lot of travel to China. Just one data point.
I received an offer for this role a few months ago and my friend also works in the position. From my understanding, YMMV based on the team you're assigned to. Some teams are very understaffed right now, calls with factories overseas at odd hours, potential for brutal travel, and crazy supply chain factors due to COVID are all possible factors right now. But yes, good name on resume and potential to move around in company to other product roles
Would you say your friend enjoys the position overall? Are all the benefits associated with Apple worth it?

Yes
Base salary is more assured but the upside of RSU as well as capital gains rates later offer significant advantage. Focusing only on base pay is shortsighted versus looking at total compensation over a respective time horizon.
