Are there any decent exit opps from accounting? i studied accounting because i thought learning “the language of business” would be a versatile degree to have combined with the experience. But even after working in public and now industry I have no idea what i could do outside of accounting. I feel the complete opposite about my opportunities outside of accounting compared to how i felt initially pursuing this path.

Accounting can very easily lead to industry roles in audit, risk, compliance, operations, or finance. Also, consulting/advisory roles in forensics, valuation, restructuring, due diligence, or transformation.

There’s plenty of options, unless by “outside of accounting” you really mean “outside of anything even vaguely financial/data driven.” In which case, I guess I’ve seen some people use their accounting network to become recruiters, real estate agents, etc. or use their knowledge to become teachers/professors/corporate L&D types

Unless you're in tax or internal audit, accounting can open a lot of doors, especially if you leave before manager.

I’ll vouch for this comment (see my title). I have a really versatile and adaptable skillset and great references, and cannot even get an interview outside of tax or tax technology. Product or project manager might be the one exception (although still focused on tax tech).

Agree with F1. It highly depends on your specific school, but the engagement from students post covid is incredibly difficult. Dealing with kids vaping, fighting, on their phones…. It’s way too much for me.

I received an offer from a firm that has been persistently seeking me, although I wasn’t looking. Work arrangement, benes, & title are similar to my current position, but they are offering $16k more than my current salary. I did just negotiate my raise in July, from 11% to 20%. I am very content with my current employer, but hubby thinks I need to bring this to HR. I don’t want to rock the boat, and I figured I should wait until next year and factor that into my annual raise. Thoughts?

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?

Saw an article about the chilling effect that the Big Law salary raises are having on in house hiring since associates cannot bear to take the pay cut. Do we believe this? Of course if an in house role offers less than a first year salary it’s a tough pill to swallow, but what if the role offers in the mid-200s for a substantially better WLB? Thoughts??

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.

Hey Dallas folks!

I want to get to know the local private companies. I worked at a private company with 2-3k employees before my MBA. They had an amazing culture, but limited progression opportunities. I'm thinking about looking for a smaller company (couple hundred to couple thousand employees) in the Dallas area and looking to find an amazing culture.

Anyone have recommendations on companies with great cultures in the Dallas/north of Dallas areas? (I live in the Plano/Allen/Mckinney area)
