Austin has great food, lots of young people, big lake nearby, great bars, and is generally inexpensive although it’s getting more expensive.
I live in Austin but I haven’t been to Atlanta so I’m not super fit to compare the 2. BUT I have some stuff to say about living here after living here for 8 years!
If you want to move to Austin, sooner is better. Rent is hikin up right now :(
Get ready for hot hot summers. Lots of 100+ degree weather. I also love nature and hiking but find that I can only handle it 3 or 4 months out of the year. Looks like a freeze every February is starting to be a trend too.
Food is great except I think diversity in food is lacking. Very few Asian food places that are amazing, especially compared to Houston and Dallas.
I don’t think diversity is an issue, you just have to find where the community is at. But yeah compared to Atlanta it is probably not as diverse.
I would consider Texas politics and government too if politics matter to you, since Texas is on the polarizing side. Austin the city is fairly liberal but the state is not.
HEB is a plus. Best grocery store hands down.
DM for food recommendations if you ever want any
Have lived in suburbs of Atlanta for years now, and also enjoy being outside, hiking, food, etc. I haven’t been to Austin, so can’t speak to it, but Atlanta is great. There are hundreds of hiking trails within an hour from the city, your not too far from the beach, and their are great restaurants all over the city with more popping up all the time. I work at a smaller regional firm and have great work life balance (outside of tax season).
Happy to talk if you have any more specific questions about the city in general.
I’ve lived in both cities, and they both have their pros & cons. But I absolutely love both. Atlanta is definitely more diverse than Austin. Austin has more water; Atlanta has more trees. Both have hiking nearby (but generally Texas has a lot less hiking in the general vicinity outside than you’ll have access to from Atlanta ). Both have tons of food options.
Austin still feels like a smaller city to me while Atlanta and Dallas are more comparable in size.
If you’re planning on renting, rent is pretty comparable between the cities. Austin has gotten more expensive in the last decade, but Atlanta has as well, and given inflation, you’ll probably be looking at $1.8k for a one bedroom in either city in comparable places.
I would honestly probably see how ERCOT handles this summer & weigh that as part of the decision as well.
Both cities are hot. Austin is hotter, but the not enough to really make a difference. I tend to compare Dallas & Atlanta for weather reference (recognizing that the recent Dallas weather is unusually hot for Dallas).
I also would think through long term career goals & industry and weigh that into the decision.
Good luck! Happy to try to answer any specific questions, but really can’t go wrong!
Austin is much nicer
Sounds like you would thrive in Austin. And agree with GT1. Its definitely more expensive (especially housing) than Atlanta, Dallas, Denver... but less expensive than cali/new york
If you care, Texas politics are a nightmare. I’d choose Atlanta purely for that reason, but if that doesn’t matter to you then Austin.
Pro
It’s a nightmare for social issues but Texas is financially one of the most well run states in the nation. AAA credit rating and great long term fiscal outlook without a penny in income tax. Even if you can’t stand their social views, it’s nice to live in a state where your leaders spend your money wisely and don’t try to make your life a financial nightmare.
I used to live in Atlanta and loved it. But lately the crime has gotten really bad, reaching into areas that used to be considered really safe.
