Whenever you’re ready. There is no perfect time and work will pretty much never make room for your private life, so you have to.
For me, now is good. Nearly 5 years of practice so I can switch firms or go in house or something with a decent amount of experience. But I know lawyers who had a families ranging from law school to when they made partner.
Sounds like you’re ready to do that now that it’s coming into focus for you.
As early as possible. Your infant won’t care if you are poor and struggling and by the time you’re involved in formative experiences that require money that they will care about you’ll be well into your career and doing well.
I got married as a fourth year but lateraled out of BigLaw to a midsize firm with much better WLB during the fifth year before my wife and I decided we were ready to have a family. By that time I was able to pay off my student loans and had some savings tucked away to go towards a down payment on a home. I know people like to say “there’s no perfect time to be ready,” but I wanted to have my loans gone before having kids.
All great insight and perspective, thanks!
