Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

Bain1, it seems like you are trying to deny the obvious, which is that Bain is moving downmarket into ops implementation work with industry hires.
I was at Booz & Company when they started to do the same thing, a few years later they were bought by PwC. The writing is on the wall for you, I’m afraid...
No. Bain 1 is saying that people aren’t hired directly into a specific capability. Which is 100% fact
Consultants aren’t hired into our PI practice (unless at a very senior level maybe). It’s one of the capabilities that a generalist consultant could find themselves working on, so things like culture and WLB are much the same as Bain more broadly.
I myself have done a lot of work in our PI practice.
I believe this is more of an expert track role rather than a generalist role
A recruiter reached out to me for a role in the PI practice. Any input on the kind of projects? Is it all supply chain or ops based? Have only heard good things about Bain culture
Was it a client-facing role? It could be an internal consulting support role if they specified a role in the PI practice. If that’s the case then I can’t really comment on the work too much since I’m a client-facing generalist.
But the work we do broadly in PI covers a broad range of topics, including supply chain, pricing, sales, cost transformation, etc.
Thanks B1 I guess I'll look into it more with the recruiter, no harm there.
M1 I wouldn't be an implementation focused industry hire since I'm a generalist at a competitor. Don't know enough about Bain's PI strategy to talk to the rest of your point.
Thanks anyway.
How is the growth trajectory at Bain for an Expert? What about comp compared to a generalist?
I wouldn’t know specifics, but comp is lower than generalist (probably 10-15%), growth slightly slower (but no longer a strong up or out culture).
Hours are definitely better and you can work really from anywhere
