Depends what you are spending on. If you're focused on cash back, here are some I like (all with no annual fee). Also know that sign up bonuses (SUBs) are worth way more than getting an extra 1-2% on purchases.
- Citi Custom Cash: 5% back on your top category. $200 SUB.
- Amazon Card: 5% back on Amazon and Whole Foods. Occasional $200 SUB (as Amazon gift card), so wait for that
- Cap One Savor One: Free Uber One membership, 10% back on Uber/UberEats, 3% on dining/groceries/streaming, $200 SUB
- US Bank Cash+: 5% back on 2 categories of your choice, $200 SUB
- Wells Fargo Active Cash: 2% on everything, $200 SUB

Custom cash would give you 5% on dining if you use it exclusively for that. Plus the $200 SUB.
Walmart and Costco are tricky because they don't fall under groceries and are typically excluded from any major cash back category. You'll see a lot of cards say X% cash back on a certain category, excluding Target, Walmart, Costco, etc. Plus Costco doesn't take Mastercard.
I'd probably go with Wells Fargo Active Cash for your Walmart/Costco. It's a Visa so it'll work at Costco, comes with a $200 SUB, and give 2% on everything.
I don’t have it, but doesn’t discover have a good option? I know it’s not as widely accepted but is most places
Just here to say I chuckled at the fact that this comment came from a Visa person 😬

Check the all things points bowl for much more discussion on this, but I’d probably say the Citi Doublecash card is your best bet. 2% back on everything with no fee.

They're better than Citi customer service, if you can believe that lol. Also I'm happy to take their $200.
Even if you really want to avoid WF, the Chase Freedom Unlimited is 1.5% on everything with a $200 SUB. Better than the Citi double cash when you add in the bonus. Cards without SUBs are useless imo, except maybe the BILT card.
Does either of the cards offer 2% cash back on Walmart grocery and Costco shopping?
Agreed. WF active cash is Visa so could be used at Costco
Here's my breakdown:
Costco Visa (since you have a membership): 4% on gas, 3% on dining and travel, and 2% at Costco--used strictly for gas, dining and travel, and Costco because otherwise it's just 1%
Chase Amazon Prime Visa: 5% at Amazon and Whole Foods--used exclusively for those two
American Express Blue Cash everyday: 3% on groceries, and "online" purchases (pretty broad n my experience)--used strictly on non-Whole Foods groceries and random online stores (e.g., eBay, Monoprice)
Target RedCard: 5% at Target, and only works at Target.
Citi Double Cash: 2%--used as a catch-all.
A1 — 2% but they just did the transfer earlier this year
they’ll probably switch you to the mastercard soon , i didn’t apply for it they just sent me all the info and then a new card followed after
discover — 5% ; the only down fall might be that the rewards calendar changes every 3 months

BofA premium rewards will give the most cash back if you hold assets with them or merrill. 3.5% dining/travel and 2.62% all other general spend.
You can do better on various categories by bringing in combo of cards though (eg. US bank go for 4% on dining, or chase freedom/unlimited/sapphire combo).
You can also check stuff like greenlight - huge cashback if you meet the spend requirements. Or a few credit unions that give 3% back on everything IIRC.
So while it’s boasted as a travel rewards card, chase sapphire allows you to redeem cash back at a $1:100point ratio. So if you’re solely after the cash back it’s about as good as any other card you’ll find. Plus, the ability to transfer points to other rewards program like Southwest, at a 1:1 point ratio is huge and allows you to stretch your points further. I also appreciate the card benefits. A couple years ago I filed a claim for losing a watch I had just purchased. And they reimbursed me for a watch I lost myself. I am not sure if that benefit is still in place but I have already gotten my $95/year’s worth a few times over.
