(Backstory) I was interviewing for an HR Business Analyst role with a company, I didn’t get the job but they referred me to a “Strategic Workforce planning Analyst” role they have open bc it would be a better fit. I’m an HR Analyst and have been working with HR metrics for a few years, but I’m not entirely sure what that transition would look like.

I’m a CRC who manages Investigator- led clinical research projects and I want to transition to a PM role in industry (I would slightly prefer not a PM role in clinical trials since I don’t have clinical trial experience.) A friend is considering deferring an offer (stem PhD) for 1 year straight out of undergrad to work in NY, either in a research institution or a biotech. She does not have any real work experience outside of her lab (3 years) and an adjacent internship. Another factor is she is just generally feeling burnt out on school after the last few years.
To what extent did you find that a year or two of work impacts prospects coming out of PhD? How might a year off from school impact her PhD work itself?
