I’m in Fixed Income Research Analyst for a buy side firm. I’ve worked at a few different shops, so hours will vary with how laid back vs intense your shop is.
At a smaller shop, I worked 7:45am to 5pm. I moved to a premier shop (Ie Pimco, Fidelity. Prudential) and put in closer to 10 hours a day now, and some weekends if there’s a new flow or evenings if a new deal is announced. My mornings are spent looking at deals that could get announced or morning meetings chatting about news. My afternoon- I try to leave for management meetings, Credit Research, modeling, and writing.
It’s a great industry, pay, and every day is different. But work life balance will depend on your PMs.
I work with several who have their MBA’s, but there’s still a decent cohort of analysts with just an undergrad + CFA (I’m in that latter camp). The best way to get in is thru a junior analyst role, or even at the credit rating agencies if you want a foot in the door. Highly competitive, hard to get good roles if you don’t have prior experience.
