I left when I was a senior and worked in industry for a few years as a manager. I left for the reasons you did: better pay, slower pace. I went back because I missed the challenges, the variety, the growth. I stayed in public for 10 years that time. I loved it. Then I wanted back out and left for industry again. I’ve been out for 4 years now and am still happy. I don’t regret leaving the first time. I don’t regret going back or leaving again.
You know what is in your heart. Follow your path.
All of this basically makes it sound like your job used to be your entire identity and now you have a void to fill. Try filling the void before going back to an environment where your job filled your cup.
No need to rationalize, OP. I might be projecting—this was a hard lesson that I had to learn in consulting and I said things similar to what you’re saying. It’s not meant to be attacking.
This is not the time to boomerang back. I can get wanting to come back if you are bored at your job but right now is pretty rough. Staffing is a huge problem and being remote has taken away most of the perks of working big 4. I’d give it a bit before you made that jump.
Yeah but on the flip side you will likely be working much more than what you experienced before you left. In my group anyone exp’d are expected to be running projects solo and maybe train 1-2 new hires in the meantime. Traditionally we staff teams with 2-3 exp’d heads below partner level…

Camaraderie is greatly diminished with WFH in my opinion.
I was mostly wfh pre-covid anyway, so it’s the camaraderie I’m used to.

If you come to RSM, I think you are making The Best Decision in your life.
If you decide somewhere else, yep you’re nuts. Why would you come back…
Looks like this one just filled up their backyard pool with Bro Adams Koolaid and went for a nice long swim
You should definitely come back. Working at a big 4 firm gives you a high that no other place can match.
🤦
Don’t do it
If you miss it, why not boomerang back? There's a reason it happens fairly commonly. Embrace it.
Despite what you read here day in and out, some people do enjoy and thrive for whatever period of their career they spend at B4. I've been at two firms over the course of my 23 years. I occasionally evaluate what I'm doing overall in my career and thus far, the pros outweigh the cons. Personal growth opportunities continue, I love the people and challenges and The flexibility is important to me. I get it's not for everyone, but many people do thrive!
Come back OP. I got u on a referral
Does big four really work 80hours a week?
Over 5 full years I think I’ve probably had about 2 of those per year. Probably 4 per year at 70 hours. Then many in that 55 hours area. Total hours chargeable and non-chargeable. It’s not too bad. You get immersed in one thing when hours are high so it flies by.
Welcome back! Yes it’s crazy but it’s also a lot of fun. Every career has its downsides so you just have to decide what you can live with and it may change over time.
We’ve had others come back too after not being challenged - and they appreciate the flexibility (hours, location) that’s being offered now. Not sure where you’re located but check out BT.
What do you do now?
Start a side hustle? Consulting maybe?
I can chat through what I’m seeing one on one if you’d like. Even will gladly refer you. I think you’d probably get a decent raise out of it since the firms are trying to hire anyone right now. Probably not a lot of competition for promotions and you “rotating” to the client side and back will give you a lot of insights.
I feel the same way…
I hate to be that person… but it depends on the firm and office. If you’re still close to people you used to work with, I’d ask them their honest opinion. We’ve had a few boomerangs recently who are happy with the move back. Make sure to negotiate and good bump coming back!
Depends on the circumstances. I was a boomerang, but it was purely for the money and left again soon after.
I say you do it with a solid plan in mind as in going for partner or similar. Cause at the manager level, that's what its all about. If you can't see that, then I would suggest you reconsider as the stress might not be worth it.
You are nuts but to each their own!
I did the same - thought I wanted to slow down as well and was bored within one year. Went back to B4 and haven’t looked back. Love the pace and new issues.
