They just renamed the later levels of Principal to Partner. The real partners are now called managing director and partner.
The real partners have long been called Managing Director and Partner. It is a new feature that you can carry a partner title without the managing director one
Happened a year + ago but yes it’s a non-equity position. Managing Director & Partner is equity partner
The really simple mental model is that all promotion cycles are 2 years. A-C-PL-Pr-Pa-MDP.
There is a bunch of nuance around precise timing and mechanics, but that’s a close approximation of the median and mode.
Don’t think this is new (ie just created) but yes as I understand it “Partner” is a non equity partner.

Also curious what's the typical time frame from new principal to equity partner at BCG?
Shortest: 2.5 years
Typical: 4 years
No change there.
The move was more about commercial presentation than retention, but it did come with a significant pay bump on the order of 15 to 20% for the newly titled partners.
