The IT field is very welcoming to new folks and has a low barrier for entry-level jobs. No degree or special training is required to work a help desk or be a field technician. The important skill is communication and a quick learner with ability to search and figure out independently before reaching out to coworkers/specialists.

That said, certifications are a great way to demonstrate knowledge of core concepts and will bump your child's resume towards the top.

The technical skills developed to pass the exam will only be mildly applicable to the job but that's well understood in the field.

Note that Microsoft's Azure Fundamentals or Amazon's AWS Cloud Practioner are more relevant in the Houston market than Google. But if they gravitate towards Google or something else and actually study and pass then anything will help with the resume bump and interview process.

Depends on the certificate. Analytics or data science possibly.

For those of you who got out at 10, do you wish that you rode it out to 20? I’m at a crossroad and I’m not sure what to do. Have some active/reserve time, wrapping up graduate school, and am now considering either a) come back to the business world or b) go active and retire before 50 and live off a nice pension. Obviously there are draws to both. I’m an officer for what it’s worth so I can realistically retire at O-5, MAYBE O-6.

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Hi all! I work at a nonprofit and am looking to leave the organization. As I browse available positions in my area, I’m realizing there is a LOT of crossover between my current org and others, for example shared board members, folks who are on our board and employed at one of the institutions I’m interested in, etc.. Is there a way to say “my current org doesn’t know I’m looking, so please treat my interest with discretion” that doesn’t raise red flags? Thanks!

I’m relocating to the US from an international rotation to work in Galveston. I have never been to Texas and I am trying to find the best spot for my family to live in. So far from reading online it sounds like Pearland is a good option but I have not been able to validate that/ figure out what other options are out there. I would appreciate all advice:
1. Would you recommend living in Pearland?
2. What are other good areas to live in? Safe and would like to be less than 1 hour from Galveston.
