At Amazon, what is the difference between a Program Manager and Technical Program Manager? It looks like the Technical one gets paid about 25% more but not sure what roles/responsibilities they do differently. Amazon
Also how technical a background does someone need for a Technical Program Manager role?

Each firm is different but depending on tenure, the payout is substantial. Some firms pay out for life, others for a fixed period.
What I wonder is what percentage of lifers there are in the partner ranks at MBB? My business school friends who went MBB and made partner are all out of there now. The pension at Big 4 makes partner sticky, so the majority of them stay til the end. So I’m hesitant to say that MBB does better all in in all cases. Actually suspect they don’t.
I can’t speak for everyone, but for many they leave because they can. Back to the pension again. B4 Partners can leave too. They just have very strong incentives to stay.
MBB partners make more, Big 4 senior partners make more. But you make partner significantly quicker at MBB
Strategy?
I would much rather have the B4 partner pension. However, there’s no guarantee this will persist over the next 30-40 years
On average, yes. There is overlap between them, but the MBB average tends to be slightly higher.
Based on previous FB posts, yes. And we get there much faster as well. Can make Partner at BCG 7.5 years post-u/g or 5.5 post MBA. Average is 1-2 years longer than that. I believe McK is a year or so faster on average. Starting Partner for us is ~$600k and low-end MD (which comes 2 years later) is 700-1M.
We don’t bill hourly. Fixed fee / specific deliverables.
Another big difference is MBB partners have an up or out model, B4 does not.
I see a lot of partner cycling happening at B4, seems like there’s a cohort that’s there for the long run but then lots of short entries and exits - my perception from a distance
Yes
MBB partners don’t get pension though, right? How critical would an EMBA from a top 3 school be if I want to get into an MBB? Sr. Manager in tech consulting right now.
I’d rather have $20-30M to do with as I pleased rather than a fixed benefit pension.
Agree with this, but fingers crossed in the meantime. Besides, it’s not like B4 Partners are badly paid before retirement.
Agreed, was not suggesting either model was better or worse
